SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTDF) is holding its 'Breakfast for Dinner' holiday celebration on Monday, December 11, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

LTEF is thankful to everyone at Ernie's Coffee Shop for once again hosting the fun evening.

Take a night off from cooking, bring family and friends, and join LTEF for holiday cheer to support education in South Lake Tahoe. The cost is $15 ($10 half order). You get Ernie's excellent French toast, bacon/sausage, and a beverage. Mimosas and hot chocolate toppings are also available for purchase.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heaping servings of turkey, mashed potatoes, and dressing all covered in gravy, served with homemade cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, and a choice of apple, cherry, pecan, or pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream, was the traditional Thanksgiving meal served by Bread & Broth on Monday, November 20.

Thankful: Community comes together to take stand against hate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The rain may have kept some people away, but spirits weren't dampened for those who took place in the Unity Walk along Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

About 80 people, young and old, made the walk from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District parking lot to Champion’s Plaza. At the plaza, Mayor Cristi Creegan and others spoke about what it meant that the community was taking a stand against hate.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - St. Theresa Bread & Broth is honored to announce the awarding of a Pay It Forward Project (PIFP) grant of $7,000 to fund their Second Serving meal annually. PIFP strives to encourage community members to make a difference through volunteerism and supports organizations that are non-profits and are staffed by local volunteers.

Thankful: Visiting Rabbi stops by Temple Bat Yam to say "thank you"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An ambassador from the Union for Reform Judaism stopped by Temple Bat Yam in South Lake Tahoe recently, showing that one house of worship can't be religious all by itself, and to say "thank you."

Rabbi Jeffrey Glickman and his wife Mindy of South Windsor, Conn. have been traveling the country, meeting other Jewish communities along the way.

They stopped by to visit with Rabbi Evon Yakar and the youth of the temple, connecting them to the larger Jewish community, and giving them a special gift - a Ner Tamid medal.

Thankful: Tahoe Douglas Rotary thanks veterans

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club hosted veterans at a special dinner at the Tahoe Beach Club, thanking them for their service from World War II to the War on Terrorism.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is hosting its popular Giving Tuesday pet adoption once again, and this year the stars of the show are puppies Spooner, Donner, Aloha, Watson, and their mom, Tahoe, all named after local lakes. LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Ahead of the holiday giving season, the Tahoe Fund is launching a $25,000 matching campaign to support Achieve Tahoe’s summer recreation programs for people with disabilities and their families. Thanks to a generous match provided by Putnam Lexus, courtesy of Marty and Anne Putnam, the Tahoe Fund is doubling all donations to this program given before December 31, 2023, to reach their $50,000 goal.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) hosted the 50th Annual Wine, Beer, and Food Tasting Golden Gala Fundraiser on November 3, 2023, at the new and wonderful Tahoe Blue Event Center. After a three-year hiatus, the event was an overwhelming success, raising funds for our community. Funds raised during this event are allocated to scholarships to students from local high schools and Lake Tahoe Community College and grants to local nonprofit organizations that enrich the lives of women and children in our community.

Mayor: Join the community at Unity Walk to stand together against hate

I’m very proud that our community is widely and vocally supporting a Unity Walk as part of United Against Hate Week. When I first heard about this statewide effort, I felt very strongly that having a public and explicit expression of our values of compassion and inclusivity would resonate in this moment. I brought this idea to our City Manager Joe Irvin, who enthusiastically encouraged me to plan it with assistance from staff.

Marcella Foundation and Lift Literature team up to gift 63 Kindles to Sierra House 2nd graders

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day of superheroes at Sierra House Elementary School. Students dressed for the occasion as the Marcella Foundation and Lift Literature joined forces to celebrate reading through their BookMode program. Each second grader received a free Kindle Paperwhite and Bluetooth headset to help create a passion for the joy of reading.

Through this joint initiative, BookMode, the organizations aim to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning.

Bread & Broth's Thanksgiving dinner still a "go" even with planned power outage

Meg Peart named new executive director for Valhalla Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Valhalla Tahoe, the historic estate on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore, is in the planning stages for the venue’s centennial year in 2024 with a new executive director at the helm. Meg Peart was named to the role last month by the nonprofit’s board of directors.

Ben Fagen Designs wins annual Day in Paradise Duck Races

During the annual Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe's annual Day in Paradise, local businessman Ben Fagen won the duck race.

The event, held along the Truckee River in Tahoe Paradise Park, raises money to help the Optimists with their local youth projects. They will also be opening their Christmas Tree lot in South Lake Tahoe after Thanksgiving.

Ben Fagen of Ben Fagen Designs and his associate, architect Natalia Wieczorek, chose Tahoe Magic as the recipient of the $1,000 winnings. Tahoe Magic is a local non-profit that helps families in need when they need it most.

Stuff A Truck with toys at annual Toys for Tots event

En Camino al Colegio - College Bound Lake Tahoe holding information meeting for families

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Latino community is invited to the next College Bound/En Camino al Colegio informational meeting on pathways to college. At South Tahoe High, just six percent of Latino students graduate with enough completed units with a C or better in the A-G class requirements, and this meeting is being held to help parents navigate through the requirements of college-bound students. Forty-two percent of the overall population at STHS has the classes needed for California colleges and universities.

Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger Golf Tournament supports Ronald McDonald House

LTUSD starts Hall of Distinction to recognize those who have left their mark on the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The Kiwanis Club of South Tahoe is looking to collect 3,000 pairs of socks this year for kids in the South Lake Tahoe community. Last year they were able to collect over 2,000 pairs and are looking to put new socks on even more children this year.

Sierra State Parks Foundation hosting virtual auction with unique items for access for all programs

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting a virtual auction through November 28 at midnight (PT). Funds raised go to support educational programs at the California State Parks in the Lake Tahoe – Donner Lake area. These educational programs for children of all ages are kept free of cost in order to build a more equitable park system. Supporting this fundraiser creates lifelong park and nature lovers. South Lake Tahoe to hold Unity Walk during United Against Hate week

United Against Hate Week, which is recognized from November 12-18, is a call for local civic action to stop the hate and biases that pose a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Across the state, 100’s of cities and organizations are also taking a stand against hate by coming together throughout the week.

Tom Millham to receive DAR Medal of Honor

The Lake Tahoe Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has announced that Tom Millham will be honored with the DAR Medal of Honor. This is the most prestigious honor awarded by the DAR and given to individuals who are United States citizens by birth and who have shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service, and patriotism.

The recipients must have made unusual and lasting contributions to our American Heritage by truly giving of themselves to their community, state, country, and fellowmen.

American Legion gifted new snowblower by Alpine Smith after burglary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Within minutes of the story breaking about a snowblower being stolen from the American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe, the community stepped up to help.

The first call came from Christina Bicker who offered to donate money to a new one, and if the Legion needed more, she'd buy them the snowblower.

Special Olympics Team Tahoe Bowling begins 2024 season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Team Tahoe has begun their 2023 Special Olympics bowling practices at Tahoe Bowl with 24 athletes, one of the largest teams ever for the South Shore-based group.

With just a few weeks of practice to go, the team is getting ready for the Northern Nevada Special Olympics games in November. Held in Reno at the National Bowling Stadium, athletes will compete with others from Northern Nevada hoping to collect medals and reconnect with friends from other teams.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Hi-Lo's are holding a fundraiser for one of their members, Carlena Coueys, who is battling breast cancer. Head to the American Legion on Saturday, November 11 for a spaghetti dinner and fabulous raffle with all proceeds going to Carlena's fight.

The American Legion Hall is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

The doors open at 4 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. The cost for dinner is $15 for adults and $6 for kids. Raffle tickets will be available for sale.

Seniors from South Tahoe High School (STHS) and all other El Dorado County schools who are interested in finding scholarships to help with the costs of higher education are welcome and encouraged to start applying. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unity at the Lake is celebrating 29 years of being part of the South Lake Tahoe community with a “Harvesting Our Dreams” celebration on Saturday, November 4 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. That is also the day they'll be selecting the winner of the Maui raffle, their only annual fundraiser.

The fundraiser helps support community workshops, and their spiritual community and allows them to host groups such as Al-Anon, meditation groups, and various community needs.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All kids are invited to the Heavenly Village on Halloween for a fun trick-or-treating event with 50 candy stops, a bounce house and slide, and a $1,000 costume contest on October 31 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Shops at Heavenly Village has partnered with the South Tahoe Chamber to provide the free event. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue with their fire truck and South Lake Tahoe Police Department will also be there to hand out candy and stickers.

The City of South Lake Tahoe will be offering free parking in the Bellamy Parking Garage from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Lake Tahoe Historical Society offers annual Giant Snowflake Class

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding its annual Giant 3D Flake Making Class on November 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The class size is limited and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for Members and $20 for non-members. Additional patterns are available for $7 each.

Each participant will make one snowflake for themselves and one for the museum. Bring your favorite sharp scissors, and they provide the rest!

National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month

November is National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month- a public awareness campaign designed to “shine a light” on the experiences of youth who have run away from home or are experiencing homelessness. Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) is proud to spearhead this campaign and offer resources to support vulnerable youth and their families in our community. National studies indicate that more than 4.2 million young people between the ages of 13 and 25 experience some form of homelessness in the United States each year.
