Douglas County School Board candidates scheduled to debate

A group from Douglas County, the non-partisan Good Governance Group, is hosting a debate with the six candidates on October 6 at 5 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center.
Small fire near Sierra-at-Tahoe possibly smoldering since Caldor Fire

At 4:15 p.m. on September 29, the USFS and CalFire fire crews responded to an area near Sierra-at-Tahoe known as Huckleberry Flat. Lake Valley Fire responded and staged in the area. The person calling in the fire had seen a stream of smoke and alerted authorities.
The fire was found about 3,000 feet inside the Caldor perimeter.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners and the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Advisory Board will hold a joint meeting on October 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hard Rock Casino in the Revolution Room. The meeting will be video live-streamed through the County’s YouTube Channel and a Zoom component will be offered for those who cannot be physically present.

First, she joined TAP as the assistant director in 1992 before becoming its executive director. Her dedication to achieving TAP’s mission goes above and beyond. This has allowed the organization to thrive and grow. Peggy clearly loves what she does, and it shows through the joy she brings to the kids and all the joy that they bring to her.

Green sentenced 15 years to life in 37 year old murder case
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/27/2022 - 9:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Judge Suzanne Kingsbury has presided over many murder trials during her career, but she said the murder of Jane Hylton stands out as the single most brutal murder she's ever come across.
Hylton was murdered on July 7, 1985, in El Dorado Hills. Hylton's body was found by her 13-year-old daughter Autumn, their roommate Ricky Davis and his girlfriend Connie Dahle. She had multiple wounds including 29 piercing wounds on her body and neck, including pierced lungs. Hylton was beaten on the face, was bit on the shoulder, and still had the tip of a knife in her head.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Blue Angels return to the sky over Northern Nevada once again during the Minden-Tahoe Airport’s Aviation Roundup taking place on Oct. 1 and 2.
Six of the US Navy F-18 Super Blue Hornets who make up the Blue Angels have been seen practicing in the area.
The aviation roundup is a premier airshow produced by Douglas County and hosted at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada. The airshow is a bi-annual event and features excellent airshow performers and military jet demonstration teams.
South Lake Tahoe man dies from "negligent discharge of a 9mm handgun," roommate arrested on gun charges

On September 23 at approximately 6:06 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Dispatch received a 911 call about a single gunshot inside a residence and a possible victim of a gunshot wound. SLTPD patrol officers responded and found a 37-year-old man inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.

This is a powerful new software tool developed by Vibrant Planet, that will allow land managers to collaboratively address wildfire threats and plan forest health and restoration treatments. Land Tender will be used in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding critical watersheds covering 1.5 million acres, making this the largest deployment to date of this new system.

All pets adopted at HSTT are already spayed or neutered which normally runs $700 for the surgery, more for larger dogs. Also, every pet adopted from them includes an initial medical check, current vaccinations, and a microchip, a savings of $300-$400.

Since the Epic Promise Grant funds cover the cost of 12 Adopt A Days yearly, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort crew members alternate monthly meal sponsorships. Starting with their initial participation, all of the AAD crews from the two Vail Resorts have been a delight to have helping with the weekly Monday Meals served at St. Theresa Church’s Grace Hall.
Mosquito Fire now 85% contained, 76,781 acres in size

In the late afternoon, as some of the large-diameter trees began to smoke again after last week’s rain event, aircraft were deployed, providing support ahead of ground crews.

Temperatures will top out at 5 to 10 degrees above average, with continued light winds and mostly dry conditions. Breezy afternoon winds are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. A ridge will then build in and stay overhead through next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Gardnerville man found guilty of felony child molestation and other charges
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2022 - 9:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 53-year-old Gardnerville resident was found guilty on September 22 of three counts of felony child molestation and one additional felony count of meeting with a minor for lewd purposes.
Robert Allen Oakes is scheduled to be sentenced on October 17, 2022, and is facing the possibility of 26 years to life in prison for his crimes. Judge Michael McLaughlin presided over the three-week trial in South Lake Tahoe.
Forest thinning work resumes near Pioneer Trail and US-50
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2022 - 8:00pmThe USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in partnership with Great Basin Institute will continue mechanical whole tree fuels reduction (thinning) operations around neighborhoods and powerline corridors off Pioneer Trail near Meyers, Calif.
Thinning is scheduled to begin this week in Montreal Unit 25 near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and US Hwy 50. Cutting in Unit 8 is complete at this time, but log hauling will continue for the next week or two.

New benches and tables up for sponsorship in South Tahoe High School quad
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2022 - 5:21pmSouth Tahoe Vikings Booster Club is starting 2022-23 off with a bang and they are inviting the South Lake Tahoe community to join in the fun. This year, Boosters is coordinating the rejuvenation of the South Tahoe High School (STHS) QUAD - the center of campus - for the students to have a great outdoor space to hang out in!
After a general cleanup, Boosters will be adding boulders, logs, native vegetation (in planter boxes- with the help of the STHS Garden Club), and 40 different outdoor tables and benches for students and staff to congregate at. And they are looking for support!

Since many South Lake Tahoe locals travel to Apple Hill each Fall, the changes are something to take note of.
