On Thursday, March 21, 2024, UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) proudly hosts a lecture about Algae Blooms at Lake Tahoe: TERC, Tech, and You. This special event will feature a panel of TERC experts including Staff Research Associate Brandon Berry, PhD candidate Samantha Sharp, and Education and Outreach Director Heather Segale. The in-person event will be held at Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge in their Emerald Room. Dinners will be 20 percent off for interested guests.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) schools will be closed on Monday, March 4 due to the heavy weekend storms. Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe will also be closed.

It will also be a snow day for all Truckee Tahoe Unified School District schools. All school activities are canceled unless otherwise notified.

From Caltrans: This morning's situation on US50 on Echo Summit is what they say is "a sluff," not a slide. It was in the bluffs east of the summit on the lake side, not in the avalanche zone. This is an area of steep rocks and the snow will shed naturally. It was about 3 feet of snow in the westbound lane. There were no injuries and crews were able to clear it quickly, in about a half hour. It's a common occurrence amplified by the rapid and substantial snowfall. Caltrans plow/patrol trucks can handle the majority of these sluffs.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty crews are working on restoring power to almost 6,000 customers around Lake Tahoe. Crews will continue to work around the clock to restore power.

Due to poor road conditions, remote access challenges, heavy snow, falling trees, and/or the nature of repairs required, there may be a delay in getting power restored, according to Liberty.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The United States Postal Service (USPS) has proposed a plan to revamp its system in the country in a $40 billion investment strategy. The plan would upgrade and improve the Postal processing, transportation, and delivery networks.

At this time, USPS is conducting an evaluation of current operations and potential future uses of its Reno Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) facility in Reno, Nev.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Due to predicted severe winter weather and hazardous driving conditions, the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners have postponed their special meeting originally planned for Friday, March 1, 2024.

In order to ensure maximum participation, the meeting will be rescheduled with a new date and time announced soon.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The public is invited to join Tahoe Douglas Fire Department Local 2441 in raising money for the search for a cure for childhood cancer. Volunteers armed with shavers will be separating people from their hair on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Stateline.

Start a team, or support another team in raising money - be a hero for kids with cancer.

St. Baldrick's is the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth Second Serving at the Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church will be canceled on Friday, March 1 due to the current blizzard warning.

Organizers are concerned about the safety of guests and volunteers.

Normally, the Second Serving program serves soup and simple entrees meals at the church, 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. every Friday throughout the year.

When food supplies are available, dinner guests are provided with food “giveaway” bags containing fruit, vegetables and breads/pastries.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A credit card skimming device was found on a machine in the 7-11 store at the east end of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday. A customer noticed the blinking lights didn't show up as they normally do when he went to tap his credit card for payment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A collaboration between Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) departments has brought over $3M to the south shore to provide capacity planning for fuels reduction work. Both departments are part of the basin-wide Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) and have been meeting with agencies on the south shore for the last 18 months to look at fire protection as a regional effort, and not separated by boundaries.

The National Forest Foundation (NFF), the congressionally-chartered nonprofit working to improve and restore the health of the 193-million-acre National Forest System, and USDA Forest Service announced Tuesday the “Nature Connects Us” outreach campaign. This sparks the awakening and strengthening of all peoples’ connection to national forests and grasslands.

This campaign is grounded in honoring ancestral tribal homelands through respectful and mindful visitor experiences and was born out of the need to grow and understand the respect that public lands require on a deeper level.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The headlines have been full of warnings - a big storm is headed to the Sierra Nevada. Some of those headlines are warning of 10 feet of snow at upper elevations, but with some disappointing storms so far in 2024, many are skeptical of the news. But authorities are all on the same page - Sierra travel will be treacherous from Thursday through Sunday, with a period of life-threatening blizzard conditions sandwiched in for Friday night into Saturday morning.

The well-advertised major winter storm should not be catching anyone by surprise.
