Sierra Alphorn Players at next Tahoe History Talks on the Beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the Lake Tahoe Historical Society at Lakeview Commons on Tuesday, July 19 for its next "Tahoe History Talks on the Beach." The Sierra Alphorn Players will be featured with their music and stories about the alphorn. The event is on the lake side of the Commons and is from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Sierra Alphorn Players are a local ensemble of Swiss mountain horn musicians who will be performing traditional Swiss pieces along with French, Italian, and German music dating from the 18th through 20th centuries.

National 988 suicide and crisis lifeline starts Saturday

The mental health version of 911 will launch on Saturday, July 16, and it is hoped this easy-to-use system will fill in the current gaps in crisis services. When everyone with phones in area codes with a 988 prefix had to start using a full area code when dialing locally, the reason was to prepare for a National Suicide and Crisis Network.

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route all callers in the United States to a national hotline, something mental health professionals hope will reduce barriers and encourage people to seek help.

Washburn Fire now 35% contained, Electra Fire 99% contained

The Washburn Fire in southern Yosemite is now 4,779 acres in size, but firefighters have been able to build a containment line around 35 percent of the fire. 1,623 personnel are on the fire that ignited during the afternoon of July 7 near the Washburn Trail in the Mariposa Grove area of the national park.

A Yosemite official told those at a community meeting the fire was human-caused since there had been no lightning in the area. Exactly how, where, and who is responsible are under investigation.

Schedule change for Caltrans SR28 roadwork on North Shore

PLACER COUNTY – Caltrans is alerting motorists of a schedule change starting next week for traffic-interfering work on State Highway 28 for a utility project.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, are working on a gas line replacement project between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

2022 Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride to close Sierra roads Saturday

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be temporarily closing parts of SR89 and SR4 on Saturday, July 16 for the annual Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride.

SR89/Monitor Pass - It will be closed from the SR89/SR4 junction south of Marklevilleto the SR395/SR89 south of Topaz Lake from 5 a.m. to noon.

SR4/Ebbetts Pass - It will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Monitor Junction and Lake Alpine.

There will be intermittent traffic delays on SR89 between Turtle Rock Road and Airport Toad.

Celebration of Life for Martin Hollay, a true Tahoe legend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a celebration of life for Martin Hollary on July 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1384 June Way, South Lake Tahoe. Hollay passed away earlier this year at the age of 101.

Join family and friends as they celebrate the true Tahoe legend. Parking will be at the lower lot at Heavenly Mountain Resort and a shuttle will be available for those that need transportion. June Way will be closed to traffic. Himmel Haus will be catering the event.

Continued roadwork at Truckee to cause traffic delays

TRUCKEE – Travel delays are continuing through November on Interstate 80 (I-80) in Truckee for roadway construction activities.

Between 8 p.m. Sunday, July 17 and 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, alternating lane closures will be in effect on I-80 westbound between Central Truckee (Exit 186) and Donner Pass Road/Cold Stream Road (Exit 184). During the same time period, alternating lane closures will also be in effect on I-80 eastbound between Donner Pass Road/Cold Stream Road (Exit 184) and the SR-89 south separation (Exit 185).

National Geographic issue features South Lake Tahoe's urbanized bears

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People around South Lake Tahoe already know him for his knowledge of local urbanized black bears, now people around the globe are taking notice.

When the July issue of National Geographic came out, the article about wild animals adapting to city life in surprising ways featured Toogee Sielsch of South Lake Tahoe. Professional photographer Corey Arnold spent three years exploring urbanized animals across the country as he created his story, "Why Cities Are Going Wild."

"What an experience," said Toogee of his three days with the photographer.

Groundbreaking set for new multigenerational South Lake Tahoe Recreation & Aquatics Center

Bear canisters needed for all overnight visits to Desolation Wilderness

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting July 18, all overnight visitors going into Desolation Wilderness will need to have bear canisters for all food and scented items. Forest Service order No. 03-22-11 s needed to protect the Tahoe bears.

They must be approved canisters designed to prevent access by bears.

Bears are extremely active in the Lake Tahoe Basin, especially on the west side. Bear canisters are essential for protecting your food, gear, and our Tahoe bears.

This Forest Service order isn't just for this summer. It is in effect until July 17, 2025.

Washburn fire 17% contained, 3773 acres; Electra Fire 95% contained, 4478 acres

The Washburn Fire burning at the southern end of Yosemite continues to burn, with firefighters losing some containment overnight. The fire is now 17 percent contained and has burned 3,773 acres. The Electra Fire in Amador and Calaveras counties is now 95 percent contained and is at 4,478 acres.

The Wawona Road (Highway 41) is closed from the South Entrance to Henness Ridge Road. Yosemite West remains accessible from the northern side of the Wawona road. The Mariposa Grove is closed until further notice. other areas of Yosemite National Park are open

NBC Sports presentation of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament – highlighted by Tony Romo winning in a two-hole playoff against Joe Pavelski and Mark Mulder – delivered the largest audience for the event since 2009 across NBC, GOLF Channel, and Peacock.

The California Tahoe Conservancy’s Board has appointed Jason Vasques as the Conservancy’s new executive director. Vasques takes the reins at a pivotal time for the state agency and its mission.

“The Board is thrilled to have Jason lead the Conservancy,” said Conservancy Board Chair and El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel. “His deep knowledge of the agency and its work, along with his science and management experience, made him an exceptional candidate. Douglas County Sheriff's Office Street Enforcement Team arrest alleged drug traffickers

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two men were arrested on July 7 on suspicion of trafficking, sales, and possession of large amounts of methamphetamine.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office Street Enforcement Team (SET), in conjunction with the Tri-Net Task Force and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, arrested the men in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Store on Grant Avenue in Gardnerville. The arrests were the culmination of a short investigation into the drug trafficking activities of David Wright, a 56-year-old male from the southern California area.

South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth All Star team wins state, heads to regionals in Utah

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Stars 13-year-old team took one big step closer to the World Series after winning the Nevada State title over the weekend.

They are now fundraising to help cover expenses as they head to Pacific Southwest Regionals in Price, Utah July 24-30. The World Series will be held in Virginia from August 10-12.

Tony Romo wins at American Century Championship after three-way tie and two hole sudden-death playoff

STATELINE, Nev. - Record-setting crowds watched the 33rd annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe this week, and they saw some great golf. Tony Romo rolled in a clutch five-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to outgun Joe Pavelski and Mark Mulder and capture his third American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament title Sunday.

It was the first time in the tournament's history to have a three-way tie at the end of 54 holes, and the fifth playoff.

Heat and smoke on tap in the South Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will warm above average this week with triple-digit heat likely for many lower elevations and mid-to-high 80s around Lake Tahoe.

The hotter temperatures will bring increased chances for thunderstorms starting Tuesday afternoon into the end of the week, but the highest chances are south of Lake Tahoe. A few afternoon thunderstorms are possible from Tuesday into Saturday with low chances for very localized rain. The primary concerns will be lightning and gusty winds.

Expect smoke from Washburn Fire over Lake Tahoe again Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Washburn Fire burning in Yosemite is bringing smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin Sunday morning, leaving some unhealthy air quality readings throughout the region.

The AQI this morning is 151 in some recording spots in South Lake Tahoe but most of the town is in the "unhealthy for sensitive group" range. For up-to-the-minute AQI from wildfires, visit https://fire.airnow.gov/. During the day, the winds at the fire area will move the fire to a more northwesterly direction towards Sacramento before it moved over Lake Tahoe.

Caltrans traffic alert: Lane and ramp closures ahead for improvement projects in Truckee

TRUCKEE – Caltrans is reminding Interstate 80 (I-80) motorists to expect travel delays through November between the I-80/State Routes 89/267 interchange and the Donner Pass Road Overcrossing (Exit 184) in Truckee for roadway construction activities.

Between 8 p.m. Sunday, July 10 and 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, the I-80 eastbound #2 (right) lane will be closed around the clock between Donner Pass Road/Cold Stream Road and the SR-89 south separation. Construction crews will be grinding and repaving the eastbound chain installation/removal area on the shoulder.

South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center just 3 feet away from huge payday at American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Every year during the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe, Korbel Korbel California Champagne® hosts its annual Celebrity Hole-in-One Contest where $250,000 is on the line.

On Friday after the first round of play, 12 celebrity golfers and one Korbel distributor representative tried to get it into the cup on one swing on the 17th hole. A local charity is selected to be the recipient of the funds should one of the celebrities get the hole-in-one. This year it was the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center.
