Preparations made to remove sunken sailboat from waters of South Lake Tahoe

The sunken sailboat off the shore of South Lake Tahoe near El Dorado Beach will soon be a thing of the past. All winter long the mast of the sunken boat could be seen from the shore, and as water levels rose, the mast tipped over more.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in North Lake Tahoe, they had sent a crew to the boat during the winter to document and verify the sinking, retrieved the vessel number and made contact with its owner. USCG said they also made the information public so boaters would be forewarned of the hazard.

It was up to the boat's owner to hire a private salvage company to retrieve it according to USGS.

The boat's owner contacted TowBoatUS Lake Tahoe to remove the 25-foot sailboat.
On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, one of their boats spent a few hours out on the water at the site of the sinking, working out the logistics of pulling the sailboat out.

TowBoatUS Lake Tahoe will be bringing in additional equipment and they hope to be back on the water to retrieve the sailboat this week, depending on cooperation of the weather.
