Event Date:
August 2, 2014 - 1:00pm

Gary Noy, author of Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots and Rogues, will sign books and lecture as a Benefit for the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center on August 2, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The author will make a presentation and sign books to help raise money for the agency.

The event will take place at the Center’s Bookworks Bookstore located at 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

Established in 1992, the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center is a school-based non-profit organization that provides basic needs services, educational opportunities, family advocacy and bilingual counseling for children and adults.

The event is free and open to the public. The presentation will begin at 1:30 PM. 100% of book sales on that day will directly benefit the programs and activities of the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center. Noy will recount some hidden stories of Sierra Nevada history from his book, with a special emphasis on the extraordinary women of the range.

Sierra Stories focuses on sixty-four unusual or lesser-known stories of Sierra Nevada history. Some stories are adventurous, some are horrifying, some are inventive, but all are fascinating examinations of the breathtaking Range of Light. The book is lavishly illustrated with sixty-five historic images and photographs, many of which have not been published previously or for decades.

The author of Sierra Stories is Gary Noy, a Sierra Nevada native and long-time history instructor at Sierra Community College in Rocklin, California. Gary is also the author of Distant Horizon: Documents from the 19th Century American West (University of Nebraska, 1999) and co-editor, with Rick Heide, of The Illuminated Landscape: A Sierra Nevada Anthology (Heyday Books, Sierra College Press and Santa Clara University, 2010). In 2006, the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA), a national historical society, selected Gary as “Educator of the Year.”

Sierra Stories is co-published by award-winning publisher Heyday Books of Berkeley and Sierra College Press. Founded in 2002 as part of Sierra College’s nationally recognized Standing Guard project, Sierra College Press is the first full-service academic press operated by a community college in the United States.
