South Lake Tahoe winter weather advisory in effect through Tuesday

With the beginning of a new year comes the beginning of a series of storms that may leave up to two feet of snow at upper elevations.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory until 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening with increasing winds during the day with wind 20-30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. The Sierra ridges may see gusts up to 95 mph.

Waves on the lake will be from two to four feet, the highest being from mid-lake to northern and eastern shores.

On land, a winter weather advisory is in effect from 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017 with another advisory expected Tuesday evening as the next storm arrives.

Widespread snow showers will develop by late afternoon and early evening January 1, with intensifying snow by the afternoon on Monday. This storm will taper off Tuesday morning.

Expect snow accumulations by Tuesday of 5"-10" at lake level, and 10"-20" over the Sierra Crest. The northern Carson Range near Mt. Rose could see 10"-15".

Tonight - Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday - Snow showers. High near 28. Breezy, with a southwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday Night - Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Tuesday - A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday Night - Snow. Low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Wednesday - Snow. High near 33. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Wednesday Night - Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 27.

Thursday - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35.

Thursday Night - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21.

Friday - A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 31.

Friday Night - A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 26.

Saturday - Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 37.
