Good Morning Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders…

Get Out Early today… Winter Storm Warning delayed start at 1:00pm… Continuing thru Monday Morning. Winds are increasing this morning, so lifts will operate Wind & Weather Permitting. Wind Holds reported at Heavenly, Kirkwood, Squaw & Alpine… Lift operations will change thru out the day. Carry tire chains and be prepared to changing road conditions… Get After it! Have Fun & Be Safe!

Today’s Weather: Expect Slight chance of snow in the morning, then snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulation of 1-4” with 2-6” above 7000 feet. Highs: 32F-37F. South winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Ridge Gusts up to 100 mph.

Tonight: Snow. Snow accumulation of 5-11” with 7-13” above 7000 feet. Lows: 22F-32F. Southwest winds 15-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Ridge gusts up to 85 mph decreasing to 70 mph after midnight.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1:00PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 4:00AM MONDAY:

* CHANGES: Slightly later onset time of heavy snow this afternoon.

* WHAT: Heavy snow coupled with strong south-southwest winds expected starting this afternoon. A brief break develops Sunday morning, then moderate to heavy snow develops again for Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning. Sample Total snowfall amounts: 2-4” Susanville, 9-15” Portola, 10-18 “Truckee and Tahoe, 20-36” at passes. Valley wind gusts to 50 mph, ridges to 115 mph.

* WHERE: Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Lassen-Eastern Plumas- Eastern Sierra Counties.

* WHEN: From 1 PM this afternoon to 4 AM PST Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Travel will be very difficult this afternoon into early Sunday and again Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning over Sierra passes including Donner I-80, Echo US-50, Yuba CA-49, and Fredonyer CA-36. Plan double or more the typical travel times. Strong winds could cause low visibilities and power interruptions at times. Snowfall rates of 1-2” per hour likely with visibilities below one-half mile at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: Avoid travel over the Sierra this afternoon and evening if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

LAKE WIND ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM PST THIS AFTERNOON FOR LAKE TAHOE:

The Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe is now in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon.

* Changes: Slightly later onset of strong winds this afternoon.

* Winds: South 15-20 mph with gusts to 35 mph increasing to 15- 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph in the afternoon.

* Wave Heights: 1-4 feet with highest waves from mid-lake to the north and east shores.

* Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress warm, layers with your Gore-Tex Jacket or Shell. Take warm gloves, a hat or beanie, and wear a Helmet for Safety. Might want to take along a face gaiter or scarf. Also wear good Sunglasses or Goggles. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen (when the sun is out) & stay hydrated at altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are Machine Groomed Packed Snow and Skier-Rider Packed Snow. Some areas of Firm Packed Snow… Watch for marked & unmarked obstacles.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Ski or Ride with a Buddy if you decide to go Off Piste – Trees on opened trails. Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting downhill.

LOW avalanche danger continues this morning for all elevations. Following the onset of snowfall, an increase to CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger will occur at all elevations this afternoon and continue through the overnight hours. Wind slab and storm slab avalanche problems will develop.
