Capt. Duffy running for Douglas County Sheriff

Captain Joe Duffy of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Douglas County, a job currently held by Sheriff Ron Pierini who has announced he will retire after being in the position since 1997.
Duffy has been an active member of law enforcement for the past 28 years, starting his career in 1989 with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) as a community service officer. He then graduated from the LASD Academy in 1990 and became a as a deputy sheriff, primarily assigned to LA County’s downtown Men’s Central Jail where he became well versed in custodial gang enforcement.
In 1995, Duffy joined DCSO and has performed a wide variety of assignments including a deputy in the jail and patrol divisions, sergeant in patrol and investigations, K9 handler and SWAT team member.
Duffy currently oversees the Patrol Division where he has supervised 46 deputies and six sergeants for the past two-and-a-half years. He is the SWAT Team Commander and K9 Unit Commander, overseeing 6 police canines and their handlers and an 18 person SWAT Team with an additional 8 support personnel.
Due to his training with LASD and continued in-service training with DCSO, Captain Duffy is considered an expert in gangs. He is an international speaker on the topic, having recently instructed in Fiji and Tonga with the Nevada National Guard and is credited with helping form the Gang Unit in Douglas County. Captain Duffy also supervised and managed the formation of the Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST) which is comprised of specially trained officers in the mental health field who conduct follow-up and provide special attention to the ever increasing mental health population in Douglas County.
The captain has a long list of accomplishments not only with DSCO, but with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Nevada National Guard as well. Captain Duffy has also been active and involved in the community throughout the years, participating in many events.
If elected, Duffy said he will promote Captain Jim Halsey to Undersheriff. .
Duffy is married to Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Teresa Duffy who handles the youth and senior programs within the department.
