18th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski and Snowshoe Celebration

Friends of Snowshoe Thompson are holding their annual event to celebrate the life of the legend, who, between 1856 and 1876, delivered mail between Placerville, California and Genoa, Nevada on long skis. From 1868 to 1872, Thompson also served on the Board of Supervisors of Alpine County.

The 18th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski and Snowshoe Celebration is moving to Lake Tahoe this year and will be held on February 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course.

There will be a guided, interactive historical reenactment tour over the snow starting at 9:00 a.m. Local legend Martin Hollay will be at the event along with Snowshoe Thompson researched Frank Tortorich who wrote "John A. "Snowshoe" Thompson, Pioneer Mail Carrier of the Sierra," performer Steve Hale who will be there as Thompson, longboard ski demonstration by Nina MacLeod, entertainment by Richard Blair as an exhibit by the Lake Tahoe Historical Society.

The cost is a $20 donation for adults, children under 12 are free. Lunch is included in the price, and there will be a nohost bar at the event.

Funds raised will go to benefit Friends of Snowshoe Thompson to promote awareness of the man, the legend, and to maintain his statue in Genoa. Both Thompson and his son are buried there.
