One dies in Douglas County plane crash

UPDATE 3:00 P.M.: One person died in the single airplane crash in Douglas County Monday, February 19, 2018.

The plane, a Piper PA-34 Seneca twin-engine light aircraft, was seen by two eye witnesses going down in a field near Hobo Hot Springs Road and Jacks Valley road at 11:30 a.m.

East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded at 12:20 p.m. DCSO Undersheriff Paul Howell said it took awhile for rescue crews to locate the plane.

Howell said the plane, which was being tracked by radar from a California airport. He said there was only one person, the pilot, on board.

The plane crashed into sagebrush and there were no injuries, and no fire, on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported to the scene at 2:30 p.m. and now in control of the crash investigation and DCSO will handle the autopsy investigation.

Howell said they have not been able to get in touch with the pilot's relatives so no name or hometown will be released until that is completed.

At this time there is no word on possible injuries or other details.
