South Lake Tahoe Hit & Run Victim Recovering; Family Needs Assistance

What started off as a normal afternoon and evening on February 10 ended in what could have been a very tragic accident. 15 year old Abijah Ahsan Sequoiyah of South Lake Tahoe was riding his bike near his home and was at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Third Street when a car driven by an unknown person struck him, carried him through the intersection, ran over him and fled the scene.

A passerby saw Abijah on the street after the accident and took him to Barton Hospital. In order to make sure there was no major brain injury, he and his mother Aisha were transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Abijah was released the next afternoon and was sent home for rest. He is doing well according to his mother and all the cuts and abrasions are healing. He does get headaches and they are still monitoring those.

This accident comes at a time when the family isn't able to make ends meet. Severe arthritis has kept Aisha from working and she's doing what she can to provide for her and her sons (Abijah has brothers aged 12 and 17). She doesn't have money for the co-pays on his medicine and they had to search for a ride home from Renown.

A community member donated a bike to Abijah to replace the damaged one, and some food has been delivered to the family, but the could use some help.

The kids walk, ride bikes or use the bus, and Aisha uses the bus when she can manage the movement since they have no car. Theirs was stolen along with all of their belongings when they first moved to South Lake Tahoe over a year ago. Abijah would walk to the store for supplies, but since the accident he's had to stay in bed and his 12 year old brother has taken on the duties.

Anyone wishing to contribute to Abijah may do so. An account was set up at Wells Fargo, in the name of ABIJAH AHSAN SEQUOIYAH. The account number is #1460155821.

The accident is still under investigation and the driver and the car involved are still being sought.
