Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

South Tahoe High School endured the beginning of Spring weather as the snow stopped falling and temperatures rose to 45F, giving students hope of warmer weather for the next following weeks. This week at STHS students prepared for upcoming school events, Julia Russell discussed Challenge Day, and Sofia Hedqvist signed to a college to continue her volleyball career in North Dakota.

In School
This week was all about upcoming events for STHS as Challenge Day and the Blood Drive both land on the March 18. The Blood Drive is run by Key Club. Signed up students will donate blood and contribute to the American Red Cross. Challenge Day is an all-day event for students to demonstrate leadership and positive influence at the school. Students also participate in an interactive workshop on how to create a positive atmosphere at STHS.

“Challenge Day is designed to unite the school and community and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back into the greater school population,” said Mrs. Russell, the STHS teacher who runs the event. “It addresses issues of violence, teasing, social oppression, racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol, and drugs.”

In Sports
Boys’ golf is second in the league following their win against Fallon. Sophomores Bailey Sommerfield and Marcus Slack led the team with rounds of 89 and 83, respectively.

The baseball team is 2-1 and sits in fourth place behind Churchill County, Spring Creek and Truckee. They play Friday at North Valley.

Softball also starts play Friday against North Valley.

Senior Sofia Hedqvist signed with the University of North Dakota this week to continue her volleyball career at a Division 1 school (Summit League). She is planning to study Chemistry.
