Bread & Broth adjusts services but still feeding the hungry in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the COVID-19 emergency, Bread & Broth has made changes to their normal procedures in helping food insecure residents of South Lake Tahoe.

As an all-volunteer organization, they have been proudly serving the community since 1989 and will continue to do so as long as possible through these uncertain times due to the coronavirus COVID-19 health issues.

Starting immediately, the following schedule is in place:

Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal and Second Serving (Friday meal) will be cancelled effective immediately and until further notice. However, bags of food will be provided at the pantry window of Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. each Monday and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. each Friday. These bags will be packed mostly with nonperishable food and possible meat products for those who have access to cooking equipment.

They will provide food giveaway bags until supplies can no longer be obtained or are depleted.

B&B 4 Kids program will continue in modified form due to the closure of all schools over the next few weeks. Weekly bags/backpacks provided to identified children at all K-8 LTUSD schools will be distributed as Lake Tahoe Unified school busses deliver school lunches to children at bus stops each Friday (the District will deliver M-F, the B&B4K bags will be on Fridays only). Bags will also be distributed to B&B 4 Kids program participants at South Tahoe Middle School, and Sierra House, Bijou and Tahoe Valley Elementary schools on Fridays between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Bread & Broth will continue to update the community if any additional changes occur.

For those wanting to make a tax-deductible donation for these services, please make checks out to St. Theresa Bread & Broth, identified with “COVID-19 Emergency Funds” in the memo section, and mail to: Bread & Broth, ℅ St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.

Many community members have stepped up to help distribute the bags of food. They will be driving on Fridays, bagging on Thursdays, or making bags on Mondays and Fridays. Vail Resorts employees from Heavenly have stepped up as well, and the company has donated food left due to their recent and unplanned closure.
