When times are tough, South Lake Tahoe volunteers and businesses step up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As one would expect in South Lake Tahoe, the community has been coming together to help others during these trying times and uncertainty.

Base Camp Pizza has been one of those businesses that have helped out the community. On Friday they dropped off 120 pizzas, 75 salads and 100 pasta dishes to Bijou Community School for families there who were picking up kids' homework and other supplies to use for at-home study. Local girl scouts donated boxes of cookies to hand out.

This week Base Camp Pizza has also dropped off about 70 pizzas for staff at Barton Hospital, 15 to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and 60 to the Warming Room. The popular Heavenly Village business did make the decision to close due to coronavirus concerns so their employees could stay safe.

The closure of Harrah's, Harveys, Heavenly and Edgewood left them with trucks full of extra food so they dropped off them at Bread & Broth for their Friday and Monday food bag giveaways. Volunteers worked hard to get the food ready which included donations from Starbucks, Pizza Hut, Whole Foods, Raley's, and McDonald's. The bags of food will be provided at the pantry window of Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each Monday and 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. each Friday.

Boys and Girls Club will host an 'open-air food distribution' from the Main Site (Al Tahoe School) parking lot from 10:00 to noon on Saturday, March 21 with food donated by Harrah's and Harveys who found themselves with food to spare. Anyone in the community is welcome to come and collect a bag of food - no questions asked.

Another group of volunteers delivered the Bread & Broth 4 Kids weekly bags to 14 school bus stops Friday and also gave away bags from four school locations. There are 180 LTUSD children on the weekend food bag program and are trying to reach as many as possible now that schools are closed.

Meals on Wheels volunteers continue to deliver 80 meals a day to seniors at their homes.

During these unchartered times, there will be many more stories like these.
