Suspected pipe bomb found in South Lake Tahoe turns out to be hoax

10:35 a.m. update: The "all clear" is about to be given at the El Dorado County Government Center. The bomb has been considered a hoax device meant to cause the major response by law enforcement that it did, according to SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler. Evidence is being gathered and roads will soon reopen.

At approximately 6:35 a.m. this morning, a groundskeeper working at the El Dorado County Courthouse located at 1354 Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe noticed a suspicious device in front of the courthouse.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded and contacted Tahoe Douglas Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit to assist in the safe assessment and removal of the device. Law enforcement, detectives and officials are following up on a variety of leads.

South Lake Tahoe Middle School has the "Shelter in Place" for part of the morning before getting the all clear signal from SLTPD.

Agencies assisting SLTPD were Tahoe Douglas Explosive Unit, California Highway Patrol, El Dorado County Sherriff’s Department, Douglas County Sherriff’s Department, FBI and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.

9:45 a.m. update: South Tahoe Middle School has enforced a "Shelter in Place" response to the suspected bomb at the nearby government center.

Developing story out of South Lake Tahoe: A suspected pipe bomb has been found in front of the South Lake Tahoe Police station. Law enforcement from around the area is responding. Employees for the court house are asked to meet at Rite Aid parking lit. Officers have blocked off all streets in the area and they are at nearby South Tahoe Middle School as a precaution only.
