South Lake Tahoe man arrested after alleged hit and run collision

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the afternoon of May 29 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision on US-50 near Motel 6. The suspect fled the scene.

The victim in the collision was transported to Barton.

Witnesses said the suspect was seen driving erratically while fleeing into the State streets near Tahoe Keys Blvd.

SLTPD Officer Roesch located the suspect vehicle at the dead end of Wyoming Avenue with extensive front-end damage, unoccupied.

A neighbor told officers the driver was seen running into the meadow between the State streets and Tahoe Valley Elementary. Officers quickly set up a perimeter around the meadow. SLTPD requested the assistance of El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and US Forest Service law enforcement officers so they could cover all possible exits from the meadow. A Douglas County Sheriff’s K9 also responded to assist with the search of the meadow.

Officers ultimately located the driver of the suspect vehicle, 31-year-old Corey Kalata of South Lake Tahoe. Kalata was peacefully arrested and booked into El Dorado County Jail for felony hit and run. His bail was set at $10,000 and he was released Saturday night.

SLTPD wishes to thank EDSO, DCSO, and US Forest Service for their assistance.

"A big thank you to the witnessing citizens who assisted law enforcement by providing us with crucial information, we couldn’t do it without you," SLTPD said on social media.
