Highway 50 at Kyburz closed due to mudslide

5:00 p.m. - A section of Highway 50 in El Dorado County is now closed after new slide activity at the location pushed a heavy amount of debris onto the roadway. Crews are in the process of putting the signage up.

The highway will be closed at Meyers on the east side and at Ice House Road in Riverton on the west. Westbound motorists can detour by using Highway 89 to Highway 88, to Highway 49 and back on to Highway 50 in Placerville. The reverse detour can be used for eastbound travelers. Motorists should anticipate an added 90 minutes of travel time or more, depending on traffic volume. The closure could be in place for 24 hours or more.

More than 50 truckloads of debris fell onto Highway 50 Thursday after new slide activity at the scene of the slide this winter on the stretch of roadway between White Hall and Kyburz.

Work will increase in the area over the next few days, so expect traffic to be controlled by flaggers with reversing one-way control since the westbound ane is closed. Motorists should expect delays traveling through the work zone, especially as traffic increases over the weekend.

Caltrans and its emergency contractor, Doug Veerkamp General Engineering, Inc., will work long hours over the next several days to clear the debris off the roadway and stabilize the slope.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue construction updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
