One man died early Monday morning after being shot by a South Lake Tahoe Police officer.

Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call at 2:40 a.m. at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on Highway 50. The caller said they heard the sounds of a woman screaming and crying.

About ten minutes after officers arrived, a man in his 20s was shot in the torso.

Officers from SLTPD immediately rendered aid to the man while waiting for an ambulance. The unidentified man died at Barton Memorial Hospital at approximately 5:00 a.m. His identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Since this is an officer involved shooting, investigation into the incident is being conducted jointly by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, SLTPD and the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.

The SLTPD officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, as is standard procedure. His name will not be released until investigators can determine whether release of his name may pose any undue risk or threat to the officer.

The woman was interviewed by SLTPD and is uninjured.

The investigation is continuing and more details will be released once law enforcement is able to.
