NDOT to prohibit parking on roadway at Cave Rock

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Roadside parking restrictions on US50 south of the Cave Rock tunnel will soon be enhanced by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
Even though vehicles and trailers have been parking in the median just outside the entrance to the Cave Rock State Park, it is illegal to do so. NDOT will be adding signage to the area to alert those who are parking illegally.
Unpermitted parking will soon also be prohibited on roadside shoulders between Cave Rock and just south of the Cave Rock State Park. The Washoe Tribe has some permits to park in the area and they will continue to be allowed to do.
This summer, NDOT plans to install new “no parking” signs in the area. Yellow lines will also be painted across the median to further reinforce the no parking zones.
"Our priority is keeping everyone on the road as safe and mobile as possible," said Meg Ragonese of NDOT. "The enhanced parking restrictions are aimed at keeping everyone safer by reducing the potential of pedestrian and other traffic crashes. Motorists currently park in narrow pockets of dirt shoulder near the highway’s busy travel lanes, creating potential traffic safety concerns as pedestrians exit their vehicles and often cross the busy highway. Erosion and sediment created by parking on the dirt roadway shoulders can also make its way into nearby Lake Tahoe, impacting lake clarity."
Drivers of illegally parked vehicles can be fined and the vehicle towed from no parking zones.
