Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver along US50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 33-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died after being struck by a vehicle on US 50 between Grocery Outlet and the Upper Truckee Bridge as he crossed the highway.

Crews from Security Paving, the Caltrans contractor working in the area, arrived at the job site at 5:38 a.m. Wednesday and found the body off the side of the road and called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

SLTPD arrived first but turned the incident over to California Highway Patrol (CHP) as it was construction zone incident. Work had not yet begun for the day.

According to Officer Mike Brown of CHP, it appears the bicyclist was crossing the highway from the Motel 6 area to between Grocery Outlet and the bridge area when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that was heading east.

Brown said the hit-and-run incident could have happened any time between 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 and 5:39 a.m. Wednesday, June 27. CHP is listing the crash date as Tuesday.

Evidence at the scene shows the driver of the vehicle was in the slow lane traveling at an unknown speed when they struck the bicyclist. The rider was ejected from his bike and sustained fatal injuries.

There is no idea on the type of vehicle yet, but it probably sustained some front end damage according to Brown.

If anyone witnessed this or has any information, call CHP-South Lake Tahoe at 530-577-1001.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
