Korbel Toasts American Century Championship with contest to benefit Lake Tahoe Community College

Putting a cork in it could land one lucky celebrity golfer a quarter of a million dollars and a local college foundation a bundle of cash during the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe.

A hole-in-one contest, sponsored by Korbel Champagne Cellars, would pay $250,000 for the first celebrity to ace the 155-yard, 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, the host site of the 23rd annual American Century Classic, July 17-22 in Stateline, Nev. Of the $250,000, half would be donated to the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, which funds scholarships for students.

The Korbel Contest is Friday, July 20 begins at 3:45 p.m. immediately following open round action. Each participant will get two attempts. If no one makes an ace, the player who comes closest within two feet of the pin will win $25,000 with half going to the college foundation. If none of the golfers come within the two feet, the foundation will still be awarded $5,000 cash from Korbel. Twelve players have confirmed their participation: Mark Rypien, Alfonso Ribiero, Bret Saberhagen, Bode Miller, Dan Quinn, AJ Hawk, Robbie Gould, Jeremy Roenick, Oliver Hudson, Shane Battier, Brandi Chastain and a Korbel distributor.

“Champagne and celebrations go hand-in-hand and for that reason Korbel is proud to participate in this golf tournament and sponsor the Hole-in-One Competition,” said Gary Heck, Korbel owner and president.

A week of play, action and thrill seekers is set in beautiful Tahoe South where 80 pro athletes and Hollywood celebrities compete for their share of a $600,000 purse. Considered the Super Bowl of celebrity golf events, the tournament features an the all-star list of players with Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers, Alex Smith, Ray Romano, Emmitt Smith and Jack Wagner.
