2022 Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride to close Sierra roads Saturday

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be temporarily closing parts of SR89 and SR4 on Saturday, July 16 for the annual Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride.

SR89/Monitor Pass - It will be closed from the SR89/SR4 junction south of Marklevilleto the SR395/SR89 south of Topaz Lake from 5 a.m. to noon.

SR4/Ebbetts Pass - It will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Monitor Junction and Lake Alpine.

There will be intermittent traffic delays on SR89 between Turtle Rock Road and Airport Toad.

SR4 at Silver Creek Bridge, SR89 at Markleeville Creek Bridge, and SR89 just north of Markleeville are expected to be down to one lane. Cyclists will be able to ride through these areas. Crews will not be present and roadwork will not be done during the event.

The start and finish will be at Turtle Rock Park. Organizers with the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce expect an estimated 2,000 riders for the 41st rendition of the Death Ride. This is the first ride since 2019 since 2020 was canceled due to COVID, and 2020 was canceled due to the Tamarack Fire.
