Emily's Walk for Hope to bring awareness to suicide prevention
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/26/2017 - 2:15pm
Event Date:
September 10, 2017 - 10:00am
In an average year, the United States will lose 44,000 people to suicide.
It is an unbearable and eye opening statistic, and the Suicide Prevention Network is trying to change that number by offering education and awareness in Douglas and El Dorado Counties, and surrounding communities.
Three years ago, the community lost a young and vibrant woman to suicide, Emily Ann Alessi. Emily was born in raised in South Lake Tahoe. She was so vivacious, funny and full of happiness. Emily left us way too early, and her family's lives will never be the same. Her family is taking a stand towards the prevention of suicide as advocates, using their voices to share Emily’s story and bring awareness to the epidemic that is so preventable.
There will be an inaugural suicide awareness walk, Emily's Walk for Hope, in South Lake Tahoe on September 10, 2017 at Lakeview Commons at 10:00 a.m. This day also happens to be World Suicide Prevention Day.
Emily’s Walk for Hope will be surrounded by Emily’s family, fellow friends, advocates, survivors and resources. The whole community is encouraged to be a part of the walk for hope, whether it is because you knew Emily, you have a journey you are walking through or you feel the need to be a part of this great cause.
