Regan Beach community meeting unveils top three plans

Three preliminary design concepts for Regan Beach were presented at a community meeting in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday.

Almost 50 people attended the meeting, giving their input on the three choices. The engaged group gave Design Workshop, the company providing the redesign concepts, a lot of input on all three plans.

Regan Beach is a city owned, operated and maintained lake front property that houses a snack bar, playground, walkways, small picnic area, small beach and event area, and water dog park on 6.2 acres. It runs along 2,000 feet of shoreline in the Al Tahoe neighborhood.

The redesign of Regan Beach was one of several projects identified in the South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Master Plan.

The current park has railing and support wall failure and there is no ADA access to the beach. All three plans presented to the public fix both of these items as well as fixing the current restroom and concession area.

It was determined in the master plan talks that the use of Regan Beach is changing due to the improvements made at nearby Lakeview Commons. More people are dropping their kayaks and stand up paddle boards (SUP) into the lake from this area as well as using it as a local walking area.

During the community meeting on the project a month ago, people expressed a desire for more lawn and usable beach area, barbecue and picnic areas, and more walking paths.

The three plan ideas all accomplish the following, just in different ways:

Improve retaining wall
Enhance waterfront experience
Improve playground and materials and incorporate creative play
Upgrade concessions and restrooms
Improve picnic area and seating
Improve pedestrian circulation
Provide kayak and SUP access

For those not in attendance, the three ideas are all on line as is an online survey to take and give your feedback. Once all of the input is evaluated, Design Workshop will hold another community meeting to go over the top plan.
