UPDATE 3PM: South Lake Tahoe authorities say a 49-year-old man dressed in dark clothes was struck and killed by a van after attempting to cross Lake Tahoe Boulevard outside of the crosswalk.
More details have been released by South Lake Tahoe Police Department regarding Tuesday night's fatal accident that shut down Lake Tahoe Boulevard / Highway 50 from Pioneer Trail to Midway for about three hours. The driver of the van that hit the pedestrian has been cleared of any wrong-doing, according to Sgt. Brad Williams. The investigation is continuing and the identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of family members.
Here is a news release issued Wednesday morning by Sgt. Williams:

Fatal Traffic Collision on U.S. 50
On Tuesday evening at about 9:16 pm, South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Chris Webber had just exited his police car and was walking to a business located on U.S. 50 just west of Pioneer Trail. Officer Webber heard the sound of a traffic collision just west of his location and went to investigate. Officer Webber found that a 49 year old man had just been struck by a full size van in the #2 westbound lane of U.S. 50. The man was not breathing and had no pulse.

Officer Webber and Officer Tony Broadfoot, a certified medical technician who had responded to the scene from a block away, immediately began life saving procedures. Officers Webber and Broadfoot performed CPR on the gravely injured man until relieved by fire department medics. Eventually a pulse was re-established and the pedestrian was prepared for transportation to Renown Hospital by a Cal-Star helicopter. Before he could be loaded on to the helicopter however, the pulse was lost and the man succumbed to his wounds.

Police closed westbound U.S. 50 from Pioneer Trail to Midway Avenue for about 3 hours while South Lake Tahoe Police traffic investigation experts responded and concluded the preliminary investigation. The pedestrian was found to be at fault in this collision. He was wearing dark clothing during hours of darkness and was illegally crossing U.S. 50 from the south curb line to the north, outside of a crosswalk. Witness statements indicated that the man was narrowly missed by another vehicle traveling in a different lane of traffic prior to being struck by the van.

The driver of the van was the only occupant of that vehicle and no other injuries were reported. Drug or alcohol use by the driver of the van is not suspected. Drug or alcohol use by the pedestrian is not yet known. The investigation is continuing, and the identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of the pedestrian’s next of kin by the El Dorado County Sheriff/Coroner’s office.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is encouraged to call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, at (530) 542-6100.
