Local law enforcement in Carson City, Reno and Sacramento to honor fallen deputies

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department's Honor Guard took part in the funeral Thursday of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell. Thousands of people lined the streets of the state capitol to honor Howell who was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

"Superheros are not always in comic books, they do exist in real life," said the fallen hero's father, Kevin Howell, at his son's funeral.

The funeral procession for Deputy Howell started at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and proceeded through the Washoe Valley and stopped at Reno Events Center where more than one thousand people were on hand.

There was also an indoor shotgun salute and, on the stage, Howell's patrol car draped in flowers.

At the end of the televised ceremony, the voice of a 911 operator came over the speakers: "All units, break for a moment of silence.”

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office also went to show their respect at the service.

Local officers and deputies were also in Sacramento Thursday for the funeral of Contra Costa County Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Francies who drowned in South Lake Tahoe on August 13.

Francies was honored in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday night with a paddle-out.
