Rim Fire Northern California Smoke Information Updates

CAL FIRE PIO Berlant, @CALFIRE_PIO - California Statewide Fire Summary: Nearly 8,000 firefighters remain on the frontlines as nearly a dozen major wildfires continue to burn. Yesterday, CAL FIRE crews contained the Swedes Fire that burned in Butte County, just as a new fire ignited on the Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation. CAL FIRE and the US Forest Service are in unified command of the extremely fast-moving Rim Fire burning just outside Yosemite National Park. The fire is threatened 4,500 homes and has forced thousands to evacuate. Most of this week’s thunderstorms have moved out of California and little threat of dry lightning remains. All Red Flag Warnings for dry lightning have expired. While both CAL FIRE and local firefighters continue to be very active in fighting the State’ wildfires, a majority of the fires are burning on National Forest land.**Unified Command Fires** Rim Fire Tuolumne County Stanislaus National Forest/CAL FIRE * northeast of Groveland * 105,620 acres - 2% contained * Evacuations in effect * 4,500 residences threatened.

RIM FIRE UPDATE - 9:45 pm - Aug 23, 2013: The Rim Fire has grown to 125,620 acres and is 5% contained. Fire has spread west of Paper Cabin Ridge and prompted evacuation advisories to be issued to City of Tuolumne and Ponderosa Hills and nearby areas along the Highway 108 corridor. Structure defense continues to be an issue with the Rim incident. Access is still a concern for crews and equipment.

RIM FIRE UPDATE - 4:15pm - Aug 22, 2013: California governor Jerry Brown declares state of emergency in Tuolumne County.

Smoke from the Rim Fire now affects a broad region from Placerville, CA into the City of South Lake Tahoe, CA. Wind forecast puts Lake Tahoe in direct path of smoke from the fire. The Rim Fire threatens 2,500 structures, destroyed 9, and is spreading in two directions northwest and eastward. Contaiment has decreased from 5% to 2%. The Rim fire has closed Hwy 120 near Groverland, CA and entrance into Yosemite National Park.

The American fire has grown to 16,812 acres and remains at 60% contained. The fire is in an old growth timber stand with no recorded fire history that creates heavy smoke impacting Lake Tahoe region since August 10th.
