Brush fire burning in canyon behind Fandango Casino in Carson City

UPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.

“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”

Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

UPDATE 5:03PM: From Carson City Fire Department: Crews are staging to protect the homes and businesses west of Curry Street. For those outside of the immediate fire area, but nearby, you might consider what documents, medications, and valuables you would prioritize in an evacuation. There is currently 0 percent containment, winds are still erratic. Those evacuated from the Carson Colony are advised to go to the Carson Colony Gym.

UPDATE 4:53PM: From the Carson City Fire Department: No structures have been lost and efforts are concentrated on strucutre protection north of Koontz and west of Curry. Additional resources are continuting to arrive and the fire is estmated to be approximately 100 acres.

UPDATE 3:57: According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, no structures have burned at this time. The fire is moving north toward Koontz and Curry. Structure protection efforts continue.

UPDATE 3:55PM: Carson City officials are making arrangements for fire evacuees. A shelter will soon be established. All people are advised to stay out of the area.

UPDATE 3:24PM: The fire continues to advance, there is no word of containment and structure protections have been put into place, according to Carson City Fire Department and Sheriff's Office. Multiple fire agencies are responding and air resources are making attacks on the fire. Helicopters are also doing water drops.

UPDATE 3:04PM: Curry Street is now closed at Rhodes. The fire is burning out of control and continues its advancement to the east toward structures.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department has been called to a brush fire Tuesday afternoon in the area of Curry Street near Voltaire Canyon. The fire, which started at around 2 p.m. may have been sparked by a lightning strike and was said to be a growing at a moderate rate. Other fires are being reported in the area of Highway 50 at Spooner.

Multiple fire agencies have been called. Air support has been requested. Structures are threatened. Voluntary evacuations are underway.

People are advised to stay out of the area to allow for fire engines to respond. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
