Editor's note: This is part of a series on all of the change going on in South Lake Tahoe. We'll be updating you with photos and news.
The Bijou Post Office has remained vacant since closing a couple of years ago, but it will soon see new life as an extension of the Beach Retreat & Lodge as a ballroom. The 5,000 square foot space should be opened by late January, 2015. Hotel guests will be transported to the ballroom or many may choose to walk the short distance.
The new ballroom is just part of the changes being implemented at the South Lake Tahoe hotel. Construction is underway on a two story building adjacent to the hotel which will house housekeeping offices on the bottom floor and meeting space on the top floor. It is about 4,000 square feet and is expected to open in late March of 2015.
Already opened is the new Tavern, a spacious and inviting dining space in the hotel lobby. The large TVs, appetizing menu and nice atmosphere should welcome Saturday, Sunday and Monday football groups as well as any other large or small group gathering.
The 262 room hotel, formerly known as the Timber Cove Lodge, was sold to Urbana Holdings, LLC in June, 2012.
