SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 78-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run collision in South Lake Tahoe Sunday evening.

Just before 8:00 p.m., the man was walking across Highway 50 in the area between Lakeland Village and Travel Inn outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by an eastbound dark-colored sedan.

The driver hit the pedestrian just before he reached the sidewalk on the south side of the roadway, and left the scene.

The two eastbound lanes of Highway 50 are closed and traffic is being diverted onto the center lane. Those traveling in the area are advised to take another route as the lanes will be closed until the investigation at the scene is completed.

The dark sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry, has front passenger-side damage from the collision with the victim. Several car parts were left behind according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Nick Carlquist.

He said there were several witnesses and they are conducting interviews and reviewing film. A drone was used during the investigation to get a clear view of the whole crime scene as the pedestrian was thrown a distance after the crash.

SLTPD is following leads but they are asking anyone with information to call the police department at 530.542.6100. The public may ask for Detective Molesworth or any other officer.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
