Local fire departments open up the doors for food, fun and information

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In observation of the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, both South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) held open houses Saturday.

The SLTFR Station 3 had tables set up for Fire Wise communities, Tahoe PAWS/TLC 4 Furry Friends, as well as valuable information for being fire-safe, evacuation materials, and lots of free swag including fire hats for the kids. The crew put on a free pancake breakfast as well.

Over at Lake Valley, there were tours of the firehouse as well as important materials on how to be fire-smart, and of course, fire hats! Donuts, coffee, and juice were offered to attendees.

Both departments brought out apparatuses for those young and old to check out.

This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign had a focus of “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™.” There are simple, but important actions one can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe from home fires. Today’s homes burn faster than ever and yFou may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.

For those unable to attend either open house, materials are available for homes with young occupants, and older folks and pre-planning is important.
