El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed in line of duty; Two arrested

11:30 a.m. UPDATE: Deputy Brian Ishmael of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office died in the line of duty early Wednesday after being shot after arrival at a home in Somerset, Calif. They were responding to a call of theft from a marijuana garden.

El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini held a press conference Wednesday morning, updating the public on some of what transpired earlier in the day.

Deputy Ishmael had a ride-along passenger at the time, a San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputy. They were shot at in front of the home and the visiting deputy was able to wound one of the suspects.

"He did his best to save Brian," said D'Agostini.

The unnamed deputy was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and has since been released. He is assisting EDSO deputies with the ongoing investigation.

Two male adults have been taken into custody. One was shot and taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

Deputy Ishmael leaves behind his wife and three children.

At 7:40 a.m. there was a procession for Deputy Ishmael from Marshall Hospital in Placerville to the Sacramento County Coroners Office. Law enforcement was lined along the route, saluting as the procession went by.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It was a tense scene heard over scanners early Wednesday morning as law enforcement on the ground and in that air responded to the town of Somerset after an El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy was shot and killed when responding to a call for service in the area of Sand Ridge Road.

Deputy Brian Ishmael, a four-year veteran of the department, had a ride-along in his car when they arrived at the home.

Deputy Ishmael was killed and the unidentified ride-along was injured. That person's condition is unknown at this time.

A CHP helicopter was flying over the scene. The officer in the air, using night-vision goggles, led deputies on the ground to two men who were hiding in the woods near the home.

No other details are being released at this time as the area on Sand Ridge Road is still an active crime scene.

From what could be heard over the scanner, the occupant of the house arrived home and found an unknown car on his driveway. He went inside and called 911.

Two men are in custody and it is unknown at this time if they were injured.

EDSO asks that people remain out of this area and asks for all to "remain vigilant and call 911 for any suspicious activity."

Deputy Ishmael previously worked for Placerville Police Department.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," said EDSO in a press release.

“The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors shares the deep sadness and grief over the senseless killing of Deputy Sheriff Brian Ishmael this morning while responding to a call for service," said the Chair of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, Sue Novasel.

“Deputy Ishmael gave the ultimate sacrifice while trying to keep our residents safe," said Novasel. "We are fortunate to have the dedicated and outstanding law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day in that pursuit. In his honor, all County flags will fly at half staff. With deep gratitude for Deputy Ishmael’s service, and on behalf of the entire Board of Supervisors, our thoughts and prayers are with the Ishmael family and his extended family within the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.”

All City of South Lake Tahoe flags are also lowered to half-staff now through Monday, October 28 in honor of his dedicated service to the citizens of El Dorado County.
