Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.
The parade officially starts with the launching of hot air balloons at 8 am from Carson Street near the Carson Mall. A military craft flyer over at 10 am will get the parade rolling down Carson Street from William Avenue to Stewart. Food and drink vendors will be on hand and it is suggested to bring a chair to sit in as there are 200 parade entries and it is estimated to last 3 to 4 hours.
Before the parade there will be a pancake breakfast at the Governor's Mansion from 7 am to 9:30 am and a $6 buffet breakfast at Red's 395 from 7 am to 10 am. After the parade will be a Mansion tour, live music, carnival, Pinewood Derby, a beard contest and a lot more. For a list of events, check out their website.
