First Winter Storm Watch of the season in place for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin that is in effect from Tuesday morning at 5 a.m. through Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Heavy snow is possible with this storm. Snowfall accumulations above 5500 feet could be 3-5", with 5-12" above 7000 feet possible. Winds of 45-50 mph will be from the west to southwest, except along the ridges where wind gusts may reach up to 100 mph. Strong winds may create subzero wind chills along the foothills and ridgelines of the Sierra.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. Strong winds may result in tree damage.

Most of the snow is expected Tuesday evening, with flurries lasting until Wednesday.

The next storm is expected Saturday-Sunday.
