Slick conditions close Sierra highways

UPDATE 7:20 P.M. Tuesday: Caltrans has reopened US50 over Echo Summit but some lane closures on I80 are expected to remain closed through the night. The first significant winter snowstorm of the season has created a mess on mountain highways.

Eastbound I80 remains closed to all traffic and I80 is closed to big rigs in both directions. It looks unlikely they’ll be released tonight.

Traffic has just been released on eastbound US50 at Twin Bridges and westbound is open with chain controls in Meyers after holding traffic for a few hours in both directions due to a dozen or more spinouts over Echo Summit. Caltrans and CHP are holding traffic on Highway 267 between Northstar Drive and Martis Peak Road due to multiple spinouts. ETO maybe an hour or so to clear it.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has closed US50 at Echo Summit due to numerous spinouts on slick roads. As of 3:55 p.m., traffic is being held at Twin Bridges and Meyers.

This afternoon there have been incidents on not only US50, but also SR89 at Emerald Bay and Luther Pass.

There is no estimate of when the highway will be reopening. Follow https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for up-to-the-minute conditions.

Chain controls are on I80, US50, SR89, SR88, SR267, and SR28. At this time there are no controls being listed for the Nevada side except for the Mt. Rose Highway. Visit nvroads.com for Nevada roads.
