Snow to start tapering off in South Lake Tahoe as people in the Sierra dig out from storm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The promised storm may have been more rain than snow at the beginning, but has since made up with snow measuring in feet this morning.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 36" of new snow in the last 24 hours. Kirkwood is closed today. Northstar reports 29" of snow the last 24 hours, and Palisades reports the same. Check before hitting the slopes to see the lift status due to wind and snow.

The current winter storm warning for South Lake Tahoe is in place until 10:00 p.m. Tuesday with the next one set for Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. to Thursday at 12:00 p.m.

Snow will continue Tuesday, mainly before 1:00 p.m. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 29. Southwest wind around 5 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
