A Time of Giving: STAR Spreads Good Cheer

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) has spent the last several months spreading good cheer to local non-profits. They gave Christmas Cheer All Year $5,000 prior to the holidays and have now given both Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free $5,000.

“We believe that both of these organizations provide services to our community members with support that they could not receive otherwise,” said John Steinbach, a member of STAR and the general manager of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. “Often making a difference as they struggle to survive, and to rebuild independent and productive lives.”

Donations like STAR’s will continue to keep TYFS programs performing above the national average. Last fiscal year, TYFS helped 68% of local clients successfully complete counseling and substance abuse treatment, which is nearly 30% more than the national average.

“Funding for counseling, alcohol and drug treatment is very important, especially during the holidays when tensions run high for families,” said Erica Eng, grant development, evaluation & data coordinator for TYFS. “TYFS’ comparatively high success rate means more community members—over 488 people last year--will benefit from lasting positive changes in their lives.”

The STAR gifts are unrestricted, which means that both TYFS and LVF are able to use the funds for either immediate needs or ongoing programs.

“Live Violence Free has several initiatives that will benefit, including the holiday season’s Adopt a Child and its ongoing emergency shelter program that ensures safe housing for clients escaping violent relationships,” said Kate Cowan, grants coordinator.

STAR is comprised of Edgewood Companies, Harrah’s Tahoe, Harveys Resort Hotel and Casino, Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Lakeside Inn and Casino, and Vail Resorts. The companies work collaboratively together on community economic and sustainability issues, which includes a charity giving component.
