9 Year Old Hailed a Hero After Lake Tahoe Area Snowmobile Accident
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/09/2014 - 9:19pmNine year old Bode Bierdneau of Marin County is credited with saving his father after a snowmobile accident near Blue Lakes in Alpine County on Sunday.
The two were each riding their own snowmobiles when Bode's father, John Taylor (JT), lost control and crashed into a tree and was partially ejected. He was partially trapped under his Skidoo as his left leg became entangled with the machine. Bode dug out his father, but with his dad's femur broken he couldn't walk.
South Tahoe Public Utility District Seeks Public Input About Rate Increases and System Upgrades

Rates for South Tahoe Public Utility customers need to be raised "in order to be prepared for fire, prevent sewer or recycled water spills into the lake and meet law requirements on new meter installation," according to South Tahoe Public Utility District G.M. Richard Solbrig. He provided explanation of the three challenges to the district in a presentation to Tahoe Douglas Rotarians on Friday, January 31.
Assault Victim Able to Describe Assailant
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2013 - 3:25pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the physical assault on a South Lake Tahoe woman that was originally reported in Alpine County on October 6, 2013. The victim has now determined that the assault occurred in the vicinity of Meyers, South Lake Tahoe. Details of the original account have changed, possibly due in part to the injuries the victim suffered in the violent physical attack.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/13/2013 - 11:36amAccording to a report in the Record Courier, the woman who reported that she was attacked by a man that pulled her over pretending to be law enforcement has recanted her story.
The victim changed her story according to Alpine County Undersheriff Rob Levy according to the newspaper. “She wasn’t attacked in Alpine County and there was no one posing as a law enforcement officer” according to Levy.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/08/2013 - 10:38am5 PM UPDATE: Alpine County Undersheriff Rob Levy provides new information regarding an assault of a woman Sunday night near Hope Valley who was stopped by a vehicle occupied by a man impersonating a police officer.
Authorities are looking for a man, described as a white, stocky build, approximately 40 to 50 years of age, 6 feet, two inches in height, 225 pounds, with dark hair and a bushy mustache. The male may have sustained injuries.
Alissa Nourse Steps Down as Tahoe Youth & Family Services Executive Director

Nourse leaves the agency after nine years of exceptional work to accept a position with Alpine County as the Director of Behavioral Health, Alpine County, California.
Under Ms. Nourse's guidance the agency has steadily grown now providing services in South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Incline Village and Alpine County. The budget has grown from $450,000 to $1,600,000 allowing the agency to expand services and locations.
Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.
More thunderstorms on the way for Lake Tahoe region

Much of the region is under a flash flood watch.
Paiute cutthroat trout restoration in Alpine County begins this summer

Missing woman found alive in Alpine County, body of boyfriend found

The body of her boyfriend was found nearby. The couple The couple, Roderick Paul Clifton and Paula Lane, was last seen leaving Citrus Heights for Gardnerville, Nev. on Thursday, Nov. 29. They were reported missing by relatives when they didn't answer their cell phones.
Coupled headed for Douglas County from California are reported missing

Roderick Paul Clifton, 44, of Citrus Heights, and also listed as being from Gardnerville and Paula Lane, 46, also of Gardnerville, were reported missing by relatives when they didn't answer their cellphones and didn't return to Nevada by that night, according to Citrus Heights Police Department Det. Sgt. Lee Harrington.
Coroner: Boy froze to death in remote Alpine County area
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 10/30/2012 - 2:54pmA 14-year-old Angels Camp boy found dead in a remote mountain area last week apparently succumbed to exposure, the Calaveras County Coroner said Monday.
Taylor Dustin froze to death after he and his uncle, Devin Smith of Douglas Flat, got lost during a hunting trip in Alpine County, officials said.
Smith, 40, survived, but suffered from hypothermia.

Search operation continues for Nathan Sperring in Desolation Wilderness area

Current information indicates that Sperring entered the Desolation Wilderness by himself. He is well prepared and is reported to be an experienced cold weather camper with guide experience in Alaska. Before he left on his camping trip Nathan advised his girlfriend and parents where he was going and when he would be back. He specifically advised that if he was not back by Tuesday, Oct. 23, something was wrong. He was to return to Tahoe City.
El Dorado County Search and Rescue deployed to 11 calls throughout Lake Tahoe and Sierra

Approximately 60 SAR volunteers along with four Sheriff’s deputies responded to 11 different deployments between Friday and Wednesday. Nine of the SAR events were within the borders of El Dorado County while two were in Alpine County.

Devin Andrew Smith, 40, of Douglas Flat, Calif., and his nephew, Taylor Brent Dustin, 14, of Angels Camp, Calif., were camping in the Hermit Valley area about 22 miles south of Lake Tahoe and did not return from a deer hunt on Sunday, the Alpine County Sheriff's Office said.

Campground at Indian Creek Reservoir to close Oct. 8
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 10:40amAlpine County's Indian Creek Campground, adjacent to Indian Creek Reservoir, will close for the season at noon on Oct. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District-Sierra Front Field Office announced.
The campground will be closed through winter, and reopen May 3, 2013.
The east side of Indian Creek Reservoir will still be available for access off the entry road maintained by Alpine County, weather-permitting.

Heenan Lake opens Friday for superb catch and release fishing

Each year, that season opens the Friday before Labor Day and closes the last Sunday in October (October 28 this year). If you’re interested and if you would like to enjoy a totally different fishing experience, plan to spend August 31 at that easy-to-get-to location.

Submitted by Editor on Tue, 05/22/2012 - 6:16pmDouglas County officials scaled back the number of homes burned in the TRE Fire on Tuesday night to two homes from seven, however, 17 outbuildings were destroyed and the fire burning in south Douglas County at Topaz Ranch Estates has grown to 4,400 acres.
Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported the clarification in a news release. The fire continues to move in a northeasterly direction, away from homes in the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area.

California stream fishing season begins April 28

On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
If you’re new to the Lake Tahoe and Sierra, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire opening weekend:
Fitch Affirms South Tahoe Public Utility District with AA+; Rating Outlook Stable

The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.
GPS helps aid in two separate South Lake Tahoe area search and rescue operations

On Saturday a fast-moving weather front moved into the Lake Tahoe area, creating blizzard-like conditions. The storm caught visiting San Diego resident Robert Barber by surprise. He had gone for a walk into the woods off Kiowa Street in South Lake Tahoe and at around 2 p.m. as the storm intensified, he became disoriented due to almost zero visibility.

Ready for the wild: Tahoe bear cubs rehabilitated and set free

The bears, each close to a year old, were brought to the South Lake Tahoe facility last summer where they were found malnourished and without mothers.
The California Department of Fish and Game released one of the cubs, a female, north of Truckee on Tuesday and two were taken to Alpine County on Wednesday. The cubs were put into winter dens made by Fish and Game biologists.

Earlier this year, Barton closed their Carson City and Carson Valley operations of Home Health & Hospice. Barton Health has provided home health and hospice services to the Carson Valley and its surrounding areas since 1987, but with declining reimbursements and increasing regulations on home health and hospice services it has become cost-prohibitive to cover such a large area.
