Strong earthquakes felt all over Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada and California

1:35 a.m. update 12/28/16: There are widespread reports of those feeling the series of earthquakes and aftershocks this morning, from Lodi and Sacramento, to Reno and Lake Tahoe, and beyond. The have been 11 seismological events in the Hawthorne and Bridgeport area, and two in Tonopah since midnight, ranging from 1.9 to 5.7 in magnitude.

South Lake Tahoe Christmas tree recycling begins

The presents have just been opened and the celebrations wrapping up, but its already time to think of Christmas tree disposal.

South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling offers free pickup of trees during normal trash pickup days starting December 26 and going through January 6. The trees will be used as compost by their Carson Valley partners.

On normal trash days, take trees out to the curb that are six feet or less in size, have had all decorations removed and are out of stands. Flocked trees are not allowed.

Emergency crews respond to injury accidents on Spooner Summit

Carson City Fire Department, Nevada Highway Patrol and sheriff's deputies were called to two vehicle crashes on Highway 50 and Spooner west of Carson City this Friday afternoon.

One crash was reported at 3:12 p.m. to be two miles east of Carson City with injuries reported. The other crash was reported at 3:11 p.m. near the junction of State Route 28 in the eastbound lane, according to dispatch.

Reno man arrested on pimping and prostitution charges in South Lake Tahoe

12/22/16 update: The Reno man accused of bringing female(s) to South Lake Tahoe for prostitution remains behind bars at the El Dorado County Jail tonight on $345,000 bail. 32-year-old Francisco Daniel Nieves was arrested on December 19 without incident in South Lake Tahoe after a victim went into the Carson City Sheriff's Office to report the crime.

This case is still under investigation.

Nieves will be in El Dorado County court on December 30 for an 8:30 a.m. hearing. At this point in time he is being represented by a public defender.

Winter storm, high wind and flood warnings for Lake Tahoe Basin

"If you want to see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm," says the old quote, and if you want to see this weekend's clear and sunny skies you'll have to get through two days of rain, wind and snow.

The National Weather Service has issued three warnings for the Lake Tahoe Basin:

High Wind Warning in effect until Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest 25 TO 40 mph with gusts 65-70 mph. Gust over 80 mph likely in wind prone areas around Reno, Carson City and Minden. Sierra ridge gusts up to 130 mph. Waves on the lake will be 3 to 7 feet.

Carson City runaway may in Lake Tahoe area

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office asks for the public’s help finding a runaway teen. Janae Angel, 16, was reported as a runaway teen on Dec. 9, 2016, and entered into NCIC out of Carson City. Janae is suspected to be with subjects she may have met on Facebook. She may be in the Reno and or Tahoe area.

Storm delayed, forecast snow accumulation for South Lake Tahoe reduced

The National Weather Service in Reno has cancelled the winter storm watch for Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, but South Lake Tahoe will still see the affects of the storm. There is a delay in the storm's arrival and snow should start to fall late Tuesday morning and last through late Tuesday evening.

Snow may be heavy at times. The winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe is in effect from 10 a.m. December 13 to 4:00 a.m. December 14.

Pedestrian dies after being hit by car as crossing Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

A 32-year-old man was killed Saturday, December 10, 2016 after being struck by a car as he ran across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe near the Town and Country Center.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the vehicle versus pedestrian call.

Wet weekend on tap for Lake Tahoe, flash flood warnings up

The weekend will be more of an umbrella one than a snow boot one as a strong atmospheric river heads to Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service to issue wind and flood warnings for the South Lake Tahoe area because of the deep moisture levels associated with this river that extends past Hawaii.

Wind advisory up until 4:00 a.m. Saturday, and Lake Wind Advisory from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Strong and gusty winds with waves 2-4'. Winds will be 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

Santa Train arrives this weekend!

A holiday favorite, the Santa Train, is heading to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City for two special weekends, December 10-11 and December 17-18.

Santa will join the museum crew on historic steam trains from the Virginia & Truckee Railway for 20 minutes trips where children can visit with Santa, write him a letter at a special table and receive candy canes.

The rides run every half hour from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each weekend.

Caltrans to hold meeting about $50 million Highway 50 project on West Slope

Caltrans is hosting a community meeting on Thursday, December 15 to present design alternatives for a U.S. Highway 50 safety project in the Camino area of El Dorado County, a project that will overlap major highway projects on the Lake Tahoe side of the mountain.

The meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Camino Elementary School, 3060 Snows Road, Camino. A project presentation will take place at 5:45 p.m.

Wind weather advisory in affect until Thursday morning, chain controls in place

A winter weather advisory is in affect for the Lake Tahoe basin until 10:00 a.m. Thursday. New accumulations of 2-5" at lake levels, and 5-10" above.

There are chain controls up over most areas as of 9:00 p.m. Wednesday. Snow will turn to rain after 10:00 a.m. Thursday.

US 50 over Echo Summit from Meyers to Fred's Place: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.

Lake Tahoe Restoration Act gets renewed support from Congress

The House and Senate have agreed to include the bipartisan Lake Tahoe Restoration Act in the final bicameral Water Resources Development Act, titled the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act, Nevada Sen. Dean Heller announced Monday.

The news comes just hours after Vail Resorts and the many members of the public made pleas for this to happen.

Vail Resorts calls on Congress to approve Lake Tahoe Restoration Act

Vail Resorts has called on the United States Congress to approve the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2015. This Act provides $415 million in funding and reauthorizes important Lake Tahoe restoration activities that began in 1997 and refocuses federal, state and local efforts toward reducing wildfire threats, improving water quality and clarity, and combating invasive species. All of these are important to the local economy at one of the most visited lakes in the world.

For the second consecutive year, the Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee team are headed to the International Finals after bringing home a championship win from the Silver Stick Regional Tournament in San Jose, Calif.

“I’m extremely proud of this team,” said Grizzlies coach Mike Gunderson. “They’ve worked hard to get this point and have really come together as a team, many have been teammates going on two or more years now. Everyone on the team contributed during the tournament and all were represented on score sheet.”

SLT Cancer League opens annual Sees's Candy Store this week

It's time once again for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League's annual See's Candy Store. Starting December 1, and going until December 24 if supplies last, the community can stop by their shop at the "Y" and help the non-profit group raise the funds needed to help local residents with cancer.

Seven-days-a-week the Cancer League will have their candy store open from noon to 5:00 p.m. in a previously vacant shop next to Beachhut Deli, just a few doors down from Starbucks in the Raley's/KMart center.

9:45 p.m. update Sunday: Chains are now mandatory on all vehicles except 4-Wheel drive with snow tires on US 50 over Echo and Spooner Summits, the Mt. Rose Hwy, SR267 and Donner Summit on I-80. At this time there are no controls over Kingsbury Grade.

Winners picked in Spas for a Cause raffle in Carson City

Jonathan and Svetlana Lang were selected as winners of a new spa as part of the Spas for a Cause raffle contest to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tony Grasso, owner of Hot Springs Portable Spas in Carson City, presented the winners with their prize on Thursday inside the lobby at Heritage Bank. The model on display for the contest is bright pink, but Grasso said the winner has the option to choose a color of their choice.

Grasso said his company donated the spa, and that all of the money raised goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mt. Rose Highway runaway truck ramp completed; commercial trucks allowed again

Westbound commercial trucks are once again allowed on the State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway now that the Nevada Department of Transportation has substantially completed a project to reconstruct the truck escape ramp.

Identity of pedestrian killed in South Lake Tahoe accident released

The man killed as he crossed Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on November 5, 2016 has been identified as 58-year-old Daniel Wallace Curry of Carson City, Nev.

A delay in release of the victim's name was due to the El Dorado County Coroner's Office having trouble locating the next of kin.

Curry was attempting to cross the roadway outside of a crosswalk near Heavenly Village Way at 10:40 p.m. when he was hit by a 61-year-old female Blackjack Taxi driver.

The accident doesn't appear to be alcohol or drug related. There have been no citations or arrests.

Pedestrian killed while crossing Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

Update November 16: The identity of the man killed as he crossed Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe has been identified. The El Dorado County Coroner's Officer has said the victim was Daniel Wallace Curry of Carson City, Nev. He would have been 59-years-old in December.

Nevada population expected to grow by more than 425,000 in next 20 years

Nevada'a larger cities and counties are projected to grow by 425,000 by 2035, according to a report released November 1 by the Nevada Department of Taxation. At the same time, rural counties in the state could see a slight decrease in numbers.

Clark and Washoe Counties are likely to see the largest population growth: Clark County could see an increase of 319,501 and Washoe County an increase of 83,926. Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey Counties could see a collective

Teen runaway back with family in Carson Valley

The 15-year-old from the Carson Valley who ran away from home on October 25 has been reunited with his family.

An unidentified family friend told South Tahoe Now that they were able to contact the teen, Kyle Bidgood, and take him home.

Sgt. Bernadette Smith of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Kyle is no longer in the National Crime Information Center system (NCIC).

Happy birthday Nevada: How, when and where to celebrate Nevada Day 2016 events

Public's help sought in locating Carson Valley teen runaway

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a runaway juvenile.

Kyle Bidgood, age 15, left home on October 25 with skateboard in hand and hasn't been seen by his family since.

Bidgood is described as a Caucasian male, with dark hair, 5’7” and around 110 lbs. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with black sleeves, black jeans and a baseball cap.

South Shore casinos continue fiscal year trend: Income on the rise

For the first three months of the fiscal year, income for casinos on the South Shore is on the rise, with a gain of 2.27 percent in September, 2016. After business expenses and taxes, the gaming establishments took in $21,730,716, up $482,998 from the same month in 2015 according to a monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Commission today.

The state of Nevada as a whole is up 3.55 percent with a "win" figure of $948,961,678.

North Shore casinos posted a 6.37 percent gain, Carson Valley up 1.54 percent.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in summer 2017.

Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned

10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.

22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

10:00PM update - Current acreage burned in the Little Valley Fire has been revised at 3,400 acres with 20 percent containment this evening.

I-580 and Eastlake reopen as Little Valley Fire burns 2,000 acres; 19 homes burn

UPDATE 1:00PM 10/15/16: The Little Valley Fire in Washoe Valley has now burned 3,460 acres with 5 percent containment. Four injuries due to smoke inhalation have been reported.

The Sierra Front Type III Incident Management Team reports that 22 residences and 17-outbuildings have been destroyed. 500 structures are still under threat.

Interstate 580 is open in both directions, as is old U.S. Highway 395. Franktown Road, the area where most of the home damage is, remains closed.

NDOW releases Lake Tahoe bear back into the wild near Mt. Rose

Nevada wildlife biologists released a three-plus year old male black bear back into the forest near the top of Mt. Rose Summit on Monday morning after capturing him Sunday in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe.

Nevada Department of Wildlife trapped the young bear while attempting to trap another bear that had caused damage to a building, according to wildlife biologist Carl Lackey. The bear that was captured and then later released Monday wasn't the bear Lackey was looking for.

Lackey says that NDOW had handled the released bear once before in the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
