Boulder lands on roof of car on US50 west of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A driver heading westbound on US50 over Echo Summit got a little more than they bargained for Wednesday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call at 1:30 p.m. January 13 from a person traveling on the highway that a rock "the size of a Yeti Cooler" was on the roadway, according to Officer Ruth Loehr. CHP responded and found not only the 2ft x 3ft boulder in the roadway, they also found the vehicle that it hit.

Illegal parking on Lake Tahoe highways continue to create safety hazards

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many head to the Sierra to experience snow in all forms, from the ski slopes to sledding and building snowmen. Even during the pandemic and current "Stay-at-Home" orders in California, area roads were full this past holiday weekend with those seeking play time in the snow.

Each year, law enforcement has to deal with those who seem to have forgotten the laws of being safe on the roadway and parking on the highways, and not observing "no parking" zone rules.

Christmas Tree goes up at Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - It was a true community effort to get the Christmas Tree delivered to the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe last week. For the third consecutive year, a tree was selected from the South Shore to be on display for the holiday season.

On Monday, November 16, 2020 the 64-foot tree was cut down by Kenny Curtzwiler of K & K Services at 6:30 a.m., lifted by a crane and placed onto a flatbed truck, escorted by South Lake Tahoe Police and CHP, driven to its destination, lifted off the truck and placed into a stand to be decorated.

Bring cheer to local families through CHIPs for KIDS 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol South Lake Tahoe office is joining in on the holiday spirit this season with the CHiPs for KIDS 2020 campaign. With a goal of helping to bring holiday cheer to local families in need they are holding a local toy drive with two drop off locations.

Bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Jim Bagan Toyota dealership or CHP South Lake Tahoe office from now until December 17. The toys will be given to South Shore children.

CHP South Lake Tahoe is located at 2063 Hopi Avenue and Jim Bagan Toyota is located at 1855 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

First storm of the season drops snow around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has been busy this morning with vehicles stuck in the snow around Lake Tahoe and on the surrounding mountain passes. Meyers is reporting 12" of snow, South Lake Tahoe 9.5", Genoa 7", Alpine Meadows 7" and the Gardnerville Ranchos up to 14".

This is a good day to stay off the roads. If driving, follow all controls, give yourself distance from the car in front of you, and take your time. The storm is moving out of the area but there will be some lingering snow until around 1:30 p.m.

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

As daylight saving time comes to an end on Sunday, November 1, any will notice the time change disrupting sleep patterns and affecting the ability to concentrate and safely operate a motor vehicle. To highlight the life-threatening dangers of fatigued driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the National Sleep Foundation in recognizing Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 1-8, 2020, and encouraging Californians to stay alert and stay alive.

CHP to have drive-through trick-or-treating at their Meyers office

Officers from the CHP South Lake Tahoe office are hosting a drive-through trick-or-treating event on October 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

CHP to focus on reducing teen distracted driving

Nearly six teen drivers are involved in a fatal car crash every day in the United
States. Inexperience combined with driver distraction increases the risk for error, making motor vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for young drivers in the nation. To reduce teen distracted driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has partnered with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) to teach positive habits and behaviors to our most vulnerable drivers through education and enforcement.

Man airlifted to Reno after serious motorcycle crash on SR89

A Wellington, Nevada man was flown by a Careflight medical helicopter to Reno after going over a cliff with his motorcycle Saturday night.

At 5:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) says Troy Costa, Sr. was riding his Harley southbound on SR89 about a mile north of the SR4 junction when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Their report says Costa was ejected from the motorcycle as it went over a cliff adjacent to the East Fork of the Carson River.

He sustained severe injuries and transported by air to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Two transported to hospital after trash truck overturns in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two male employees of South Tahoe Refuse (STR) were transported to Barton Hospital Thursday after the trash truck they were in turned over.

At 10:36 a.m. October 15, the trash truck was heading south on Pioneer Trail when its driver attempted to make a right-hand turn onto Elks Club Drive. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the driver was using excessive speed when he tried to make the tight turn, and the fully loaded truck turned over onto its left side on Elks Club.

Echo Summit project remains ahead of schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All seven of the 96-foot long girders have been placed on US50 at Echo Summit. Over night, ultra-high performance concrete was poured to connect them and now heating blankets are keeping the concrete warm during its curing process.

NEXT STEPS
Concrete barrier rail is planned to be poured starting tomorrow morning.
Asphalt paving on the approaches to the bridge is planned to start this Sunday.

According to Caltrans, the project remains ahead of schedule to reopen by or before Oct. 2.

US50 over Echo Summit closes early Friday for bridge replacement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The planned two-week closure of U.S. Highway 50 along a 1.2 mile stretch of Echo Summit will begin Friday, September 18 at 3:00 a.m. One-lane controlled traffic has been happening all week, and now both lanes will be closed as crews replace the 1939 bridge with brand new girders to meet seismic and safety standards.

Investigation underway after man dies when deputies attempt to assist medics

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Just before 9:00 p.m. on September 12, deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) were called to a residence on Rainbow Ridge in Placerville. El Dorado County Fire paramedics were reportedly having difficulty getting a combative patient to a hospital.

When deputies arrived on scene they contacted the medics and 49-year-old Odie Prettyman. The man was in obvious medical and mental distress but refused to be transported by medics, according to EDSO Sgt. Anthony Prencipe.

Creek Fire grows to over 143,000 acres

The Creek Fire burning south of Yosemite near Shaver Lake has grown to 143,929 acres. The fire, which started Friday night, continues to grow under extreme conditions causing crowning and wind driven runs and long range spotting. There is no containment at this time.

Smoke from the Creek Fire has filled the Lake Tahoe Basin for the past three days.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following is a list of the long term and short term projects the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled for the week around Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra and El Dorado County.

Most traffic-interfering work will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 due to the Labor Day holiday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you are accustomed to paying premium prices for parking in towns like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento, how much would you be willing to pay for a parking ticket in Lake Tahoe?

Apprently whatever it costs.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued 297 parking citations along SR89 at Emerald Bay in July and 273 during the first 11 days of August. Six vehicles were towed from the area during this time.

Fatal crash south of Lake Tahoe near Blue Lakes claims life of 74-year-old Dayton man

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe is reporting a fatal collision Wednesday on Blue Lakes Road off of SR88 south of Lake Tahoe.

In the early morning hours of August 5, 74-year-old Michael Glenn Pace of Dayton, Nevada was traveling southbound on Blue Lakes Road, north of Sunset Lake Road, when he failed to negotiate a left curve in the road. CHP says Pace went onto the gravel shoulder and attempted to steer back onto the roadway but his vehicle overturned, tumbled 150 feet down a steep embankment and struck a tree.

Fireworks banned in all Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you were planning on setting off fireworks around Lake Tahoe this 4th of July, you can forget about it. They are illegal around the lake and in neighboring counties. A mild winter and a large amount of forest fuels put the area at a high risk of fire this summer, and fireworks could be devastating.

Without the official fireworks shows at the north and south ends of the lake, many fear people will resort to the fireworks bought at roadside stands and Indian reservations. While those are legal in the areas they are sold, they are not legal at Lake Tahoe.

Semi-truck rollover at the Y in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A semi-truck heading from Oakland, California to Dayton, Nevada rolled over at the Y in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning.

At 11:04 a.m., South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Rescue Departments responded to the intersection of US50 and Emerald Bay Road to a call of a tractor-trailer rollover.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver of the semi was heading northbound on Emerald Bay Road when he took the right turn to go east on US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard at a faster speed than the turn allows.

Day-long traffic jam over Echo Summit as vehicles leave Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sunday has been one big traffic jam for travelers trying to head west over Echo Summit. And as it the normal case, when traffic backs up the mapping apps direct drivers to side residential roads, many of which were unplowed and hard to navigate.

As of 7:30 p.m., traffic is still very heavy in Meyers and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently working on two accidents, one west of Sierra-at-Tahoe Road and the other east of Strawberry.

Two seriously injured in SR-88 collision near Red Lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two people in their 80s had to be airlifted to Renown Hospital in Reno after the vehicle they were hit was struck by a tractor-trailer on February 4, 2020.

At 2:15 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the area of the collision which was on SR-88 east of Red Lake Road. From their preliminary investigation, a tractor-trailer driven by 40-year-old Juan C. Hernandez of Vacaville, California was driving eastbound at the same time a Honda CRV with driver George Schultz, 81, and his passenger Patricia Schultz, 80, were headed west.

DUI suspect arrested after rollover crash on US50 at Echo Summit; Westbound traffic delayed an hour

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has arrested the driver of the Ford truck involved in the single-vehicle rolloever just west of Lake Tahoe Sunday morning. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in the 11:16 a.m. crash.

The highway was backed up for over an hour as the truck and driver were removed from the scene.

12:37 p.m. update: US50 over Echo Summit is now open with no controls. The vehicle has been removed.

Drivers stopped for snow play adventures continue to park dangerously & illegally

"Successful" evening at SnowGlobe's first night in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With no arrests made by the South Lake Tahoe Police, CHP or El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, and no medical transports, and a fewer number of phone call/email complaints, the City of South Lake Tahoe is calling the first night of the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival a success.

25 minors were issued citations for alcohol issues by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) at SnowGlobe and they issued eight violations to businesses outside the venue.

Dozens of new California laws go into effect in 2020

New laws will be going into effect in California in the new year, putting into place California legislature action during 2019. There are many changes including road safety and distracted driving penalties, roadkill rules, minimum wage, independent workers and rent caps.

US50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe reopens after head-on collision

7:15 p.m. UPDATE: All lanes have been reopened on US50 west of Sierra-at-Tahoe after a two-car head-on collision between a van and a SUV just after 5:00 p.m. Sunday. All injured parties have been transferred to Barton and the vehicles have been towed away.

At this time the extent of injuries is unknown but unconfirmed reports say all are minor at this time.

Snow brings a mess to roads around South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The latest storm hit quickly Sunday morning, bringing snow to South Lake Tahoe area roads and, with those, chain controls, traffic issues and collisions.

Drivers heading west over Echo Summit have been attempting short cuts through Lake Tahoe Blvd., Mandan Street, Sawmill Road and North Upper Truckee, and because of that they are creating a mess with double parking as they put on chains and blocking the roadway.

Woman arrested on felony DUI charges after two-car collision in South Lake Tahoe

7:45 p.m.- A 44-year-old woman has been arrested on felony DUI charges after the Nisan XTerra she was driving collided with a Toyota Tundra on US50 and Ski Run Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe at 5:12 p.m. Friday, December 20.

She is currently at Barton Hospital being treated for an injury and to have her blood drawn (at her request). Once released she will be booked into the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe, according to SLTPD Sgt. Nick Carlquist.

South Lake Tahoe CHP office collecting toys for kids

The South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol Office (CHP) in Meyers is collecting toys for children in the community.

They will have a barrel in their office through the end of the week, December 20.

Once collected the toys will be distributed among local, South Lake Tahoe and Meyers nonprofits who need them for their clients.

CHP is located at 2063 Hopi Avenue, South Lake Tahoe. Call Officer Ruth Loehr at (530) 577-1001. The office is open 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. M-F.

US50 reopens after 77 cows wrangled after escape from jackknifed big rig

10:15 p.m. update: US50 is now open in both directions. The last of the cows were wrangled and removed from the roadway.

77 cows were on the cattle truck when it jackknifed.

9:00 p.m. update: CHP reports US50 is still closed and they estimate it will reopen by 10:00 p.m.

It isn't the snow over Echo Summit that is hampering the Wednesday night drive on Highway 50 east of Placerville, its the cows and a jackknifed big rig near Apple Cafe and Carson Road.

Chain controls go up as storm hits Lake Tahoe

5:00 p.m. Update: Expect a snowy night and slow-moving over roads in the Sierra. Chains controls on US50 are now up starting in Cedar Grove, west of Pollock Pines, at Pioneer on SR88, and above Gold Run on I80.

At this hour, traffic is at a standstill on I80 after multiple spinouts and crashes all the way to the California-Nevada state line.

CHP is also reporting some issues on US50 west of Echo Summit with two spots were cars are off the roadway, as well as SR88 near Christmas Valley.

No planned weekend traffic relief in Meyers this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Residents attending the El Dorado County Town Hall meeting in Meyers on Thursday didn't hear what they wanted to about the upcoming winter and any plans that could be put in place to alleviate traffic jams in neighborhoods.

As is the case with all meetings concerning traffic in Meyers, there were several audience members with ideas from instituting maximum vehicles allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin to turn restrictions and road closures during specific hours.

Kentucky man arrested after allegedly stealing EDSO vehicle from South Lake Tahoe parking lot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 30-year-old man from Kentucky is behind bars after allegedly stealing an El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) patrol car from South Lake Tahoe.

During shift change on Wednesday morning at their South Lake Tahoe office, a deputy noticed their loaded patrol SUV was missing from the parking lot. EDSO immediately began to track the SUV and found it to be traveling westbound on US50 past Echo Summit so they advised CHP, Placerville Police Department (PPD) and EDSO units on the west slope.

Caltrans and partners officially open first of two roundabouts in Meyers

Caltrans addressed what they reported to be an increase of accidents at the intersection of US50 and SR89 with a $7.3 million roundabout in Meyers, and today there was a ribbon-cutting with local partners to officially open it up.

What used to be a T-intersection with one stop sign is now a three-leg roundabout with a bypass lane. Years of studies, planning, environmental reviews, and engineering led to this past summer's build by Q&D Construction.

All back open after overturned truck closes parts of road in South Lake Tahoe

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Most likley it will be the rate of speed a truck driver was traveling at that caused a semi-truck carrying woodchips to overturn in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning.

The 51-year-old woman from Placerville who was at the wheel was traveling from the south on Emerald Bay Road/US50 when she attempted a right-hand turn onto Lake Tahoe Blvd./US50. The truck tipped over and the cab and woodchips slide over into the westbound lanes of Lake Tahoe Blvd.
