As we prepare to bid the year of 2020 a fond farewell, we are celebrating Christmas as best we can during these unprecedented and uncertain times.
I could start with all the normal holiday greetings like Merry Christmas, May your holidays sparkle with joy and laughter, or I hope the magic of Christmas fills every corner of your heart and home with joy — now and always, but this year seems like so much more is needed.

Christmas started early for this guy once the pandemic hit. I put my Christmas lights up over the 4th of July and for a short while started watching Christmas movies too to try and get that feel-good feeling happening. Okay, I also did it because I wanted to watch movies where no one was wearing a mask and hugging one another without fear of being exposed. I’ve always enjoyed movies for their pure escapism and who doesn’t want to escape what we’ve been through already ya know? I also like being wrapped around a movie completely.
'Tis the season to be fire safe

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. Many of the Christmas Trees in homes have now been there for a week or two, and precautions can be taken to prevent a fire that would ruin the holidays.
Christmas Tree goes up at Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - It was a true community effort to get the Christmas Tree delivered to the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe last week. For the third consecutive year, a tree was selected from the South Shore to be on display for the holiday season.
On Monday, November 16, 2020 the 64-foot tree was cut down by Kenny Curtzwiler of K & K Services at 6:30 a.m., lifted by a crane and placed onto a flatbed truck, escorted by South Lake Tahoe Police and CHP, driven to its destination, lifted off the truck and placed into a stand to be decorated.

Sugar Bowl Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country will open for the 2020/21 winter season on Friday, November 27, 2020 with new safety procedures.
“We are eager to welcome our guests back to the mountain and are thrilled that opening day is just a week away,” said Greg Dallas, President and CEO of Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge. “Our team has worked tirelessly on a reopening plan that keeps the safety of our guests and staff as the top priority.”
Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits sold out in one day

Christmas tree permits for National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin are now sold out! They went on sale one day ago and all 2,000 online permits were issued on a first-come, first served basis.
Nearby Eldorado, Humboldt-Toiyabe and Tahoe national forests are also selling Christmas tree permits online. Check permit availability for these forests at www.recreation.gov.
No additional permits will be authorized for this season.
In addition, Christmas trees may be purchased from private Christmas tree farms in El Dorado, Nevada and Placer counties.

2018 – 2019 was a year of endings and new beginnings. Tahoe Youth & Family Services faced a lot of change. As we all know, change is hard but change can also be exciting. Both our staff and board are embracing the New Year with excitement and renewed energy.
The following are new programs that will be happening:
o Homeless program for youth 18 – 24 years in South Lake Tahoe, SLT
o Expanded SLT Host home program for youth under 18 including those youth who are involved with child welfare services, juvenile probation, and the McKinney Vento program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four local families were treated to presents for their children at Fire & Ice in South Lake Tahoe on Monday. Mom even got to take home a special gift too!
Identified through SOS Outreach, the kids met with the jolly Santa Claus and were given bags of gifts to take home.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plenty of permits to cut down Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin remain at both sales locations. Due to permits being sold out after just a week in the past, people were only allowed to buy one of the $10 permits per family this year.
The result is plenty of leftovers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long lines at the US Forest Service office in South Lake Tahoe on Monday put a dent in the supply of Christmas tree permits, but there are still many left.
Last year the supply was depleted in two weeks but the change in policy to only one permit per family instead of two may have had an effect on the numbers still available.
The USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in South Lake Tahoe is open Friday until 4:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Not wanting to end up without a Christmas tree permit this year, a long line of people surrounded the USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit building in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning. When the doors opened at 8:00 a.m., the lobby immediately filled and the line continued to grow.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Permits cost $10 each payable by cash, check or credit card (though they prefer the quicker transaction of cash).
There is a change to the policy this year - only one permit will be allowed per family or per address, instead of the previous two. They said by limiting permits to one per family, more will enjoy cutting down a tree this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People have been asking for weeks when the popular Christmas Tree permits will be going on sale in Lake Tahoe. Though exact details on all of the locations where the permits will be sold, the will go on sale November 25, 2019.
Last year the permits were sold out in two weeks.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will sell the permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vegetation fires are natural and were normal before policies were created to suppress them for fear of uncontrollable and destructive wildfires as seen in the late 1800s. When some of the first residents arrived in Lake Tahoe between the Gold Rush and Silver Strike, it was common to see just six-seven Jeffrey Pines per acre. Trees in the Tahoe Basin were clear cut to provide the lumber for building mines under Virginia City.

Wind Holds and Lift Closures. Road Controls Posted for all roadways with chain restrictions posted. Hwy 88 & Emerald Bay Road Closed… Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!

Fresh Powder reported at all Resorts… Resorts are digging out and Lifts will be on Delayed openings today… Winter Strom Warning in effect thru 12 pm Sunday… Expect Upper Mtn. Wind Holds and Lift Closures. At this time (8:30 am), I-80, Hwy 88, Hwy 267, Hwy 431 & Emerald Bay Road are CLOSED… All other roadways have chain restrictions posted. Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!
