Road Beat: 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, A Double Wow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/24/2020 - 7:06pmI continue to remark in several recent Road Beats, that Honda is on a roll, after testing this new Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, I have to report that the roll is still accelerating and rather quickly, including its price. Here is a car with loads of utility, outstanding performance, great fuel economy, superb handling and good comfort for a sticker price not $22,380 with the boat ride from Swindon, Wiltshire, England, but $29,780. That’s right a price bump of about 30 percent for the Touring model.
Gingerbread displays at Harrah's and Harveys depict Virginia City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/11/2018 - 2:34pmJust in time for the holidays, elves from the Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe bakery departments have created two “Gingerbread Virginia City” displays in the lobbies of both of their lobbies.
It took 400 pounds of fresh secret gingerbread spiced dough and 120 pounds of royal icing to create the hundreds of gingerbread cutout, house, numerous frosted candies, candy canes and pinecones which are part of the displays. There was also 200 hours of craftsmen-like hard work accomplished with the help of five of Harrah’s and Harveys top international culinary students working on the projects.

Hopeful Henry: How pets can enjoy Thanksgiving too!
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/22/2016 - 8:59pm‘Tis the season for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on under-cooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2016 - 2:22pmUnknown to many, including those in the ice cream business, today is National Ice Cream Day! Celebrated on the third Sunday in July, the holiday was declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as a way to promote the economic well-being of the U.S. dairy industry.
While most don't need a reason to enjoy ice cream, Reagan's move called for the people of the United States to use ceremonies and activities to pay tribute to ice cream.
Why argue with this proclamation? It sounds reasonable!
Scams on the rise on the South Shore, targeting people as tax returns come in
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/14/2016 - 3:57pmJust as people are seeing some extra cash in their pocket with tax returns being processed, scams are on the rise in South Lake Tahoe, and elsewhere, trying to cash in on the extra dough.
In South Lake Tahoe last week, a woman who was selling furniture was caught up in a scam that ended up costing her $1,500, the same price she was selling the items for. According to El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Seligsohn, scams are getting more sophisticated such as the vacation rental scams, but the sold furniture scam this victim fell for is very common.
Hopeful Henry: Many household items are poisonous to your dog
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 7:15amPoison Prevention Week just wrapped up, but the message is always important. The week is a campaign over 50 years old. Every year, we are urged to take notice of the chemicals in our lives that are dangerous. While much of the effort is spent on parents of young children, pets are likewise vulnerable to poisoning. In many instances, pets are MORE prone to poisoning, since we may not be wary of foods or plants that we have no problem with but are toxic to animals.

"Fast casual pizza is picking up across the country," said Baker. "I thought it'd be a good idea here."

"The best thing about our pizza is that you don't have to share," added Baker.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/04/2015 - 10:46pmDear Hopeful Henry,
I read your article about Halloween safety, thank you for the information on the artificial sweetener now showing up in peanut butters. I was hoping you could advise on what other food items are bad for my dog.
Thanks,

Betty, so glad you found the information from last week’s article useful and your question is a great one. To answer your question with the most accuracy I obtained this list from the ASPCA Poison Control Center.

Made in Tahoe: Don the Baker dishes up shtick with his sweets
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 8:09amIn this life, Don Ewing is a baker. In a previous life, he probably had his own TV show based on his life as a comedian who does shtick based on flour, yeast and water.
While South Shore is lucky to have Howie Nave as the emcee of all things standup comedy, Ewing, known around town as "Don the Baker," knows he can't compete on the same stage.
"I'm not really not funny," he says. "I'm not rich, either. I'm a baker's man who kneads dough."
