South Tahoe Now reached out to the candidates and below are their answers to a set of questions. For the two four-year terms, incumbent Kelly Sheehan is running for reelection, Duane Wallace is running after being appointed to fill Jim Jones's spot on the board until this election, and they are joined by David Peterson.
South Tahoe High's Kody Griffis signs to play football in South Dakota
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/08/2019 - 4:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We are super proud of you," South Tahoe High Football Coach Louis Franklin told Kody Griffis on Thursday as he signed his letter to play next year for the Presentation College Saints.
Surrounded by family, friends and teammates, Kody said he is looking forward to heading to South Dakota this summer to start college and playing at the next level.
"Thank you to all the coaches, especially Petties and Franklin," said Kody. "And to Goldberg for helping me physically and mentally."
John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/04/2019 - 7:42pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.
It turned out they didn't have to look far.
John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.
Barton offers free physicals for local athletes

All high school, middle school, and Pop Warner athletes from South Tahoe area are eligible to attend the June 5 event at South Tahoe High School. Physicals are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. for South Tahoe athletes, 6:00 p.m. for Pop Warner football players, and 6:30 p.m. for Whittell athletes.
New NFL contingent to play at American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/19/2017 - 9:34amCharles Woodson, Travis Kelce, Doug Pederson, Mike Zimmer and Adam Thielen will make up the NFL contingent of first time competitors at the annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood in Lake Tahoe July 14-16.
This is the 28th year the 54-hole tournament has been on the South Shore, offering a purse of $600,000 while also raising money for local and national charities.
New Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High already big success
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/06/2017 - 11:16pmThe South Lake Tahoe community came together early in 2016 to raise money for a new Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High, and the investment is already paying huge dividends.
"This room is changing the culture of our school," said STHS Football Coach Louis Franklin. "Having a room like this allows each kid to reach their genetic potential."
Student athletes are getting stronger, injuries are down and they are able to maximize their potential on the court, the field, the pool, or whatever the venue is for their sport. Cheerleaders and dancers also utilize the facility.
Former Truckee High football coach dies in head-on collision
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/02/2017 - 11:41amFormer Truckee High School head football coach Robert Shaffer was killed in a head-on collision outside of Sierraville at Saturday night according to the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.
Shaffer, his wife Lisa and 22-year-old son Patrick were in their Toyota Corolla on SR-89 in Sierra County just before 9:30 p.m. when a Ford F250 driven by 54-year-old David Slaughter of Sacramento drifted into Shaffer's lane.
National Signing Day for STHS's Tommy Cefalu: Headed to Eastern Oregon University
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/01/2017 - 3:33pmSouth Tahoe High School's star quarterback is headed north to fill the same position at Eastern Oregon University (EOU). Tommy Cefalu signed a letter of intent to play for the Mountaineers on National Signing Day, Wednesday, February 1, surrounded by his family, friends, teammates and coaches.
The offer for the two sport South Tahoe High athlete (he also plays for his dad Joby on the school's basketball team) is a full ride scholarship. Tommy plans on majoring in Business Administration.

Barton providing free sports physicals to all student athletes

All high school, middle school, and Pop Warner athletes from the Tahoe area can participate.
The free physicals are available at Barton Urgent Care and Family Practice the following days and times:

Search called off for UNR football player missing in waters of Lake Tahoe

The Placer County Sheriff's Office reported Saturday, June 11 that two days of searching have not recovered Marc Ma, a 20-year-old football player for the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).
Strength and Conditioning room and program to be added at South Tahoe High

While Sports Med teaches students how to help athletes after injuries occur, the strength and conditioning program will teach students how to train in a way to prevent injuries.
At Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting, the board voted 4-1 to add the Strength & Conditioning center with accompanying classes at STHS.
Two El Dorado County JV football players hospitalized after game
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/29/2015 - 9:00pmUnion Mine High School sophomores Nick Brown and Justin Schwartz had just finished leading their junior varsity football team to a 27-8 win over Foothill High School on Friday night when people noticed something wasn’t quite right.
Then Brown passed out, said El Dorado Union High School District Superintendent Stephen Wehr.
The two were rushed to the emergency care, Brown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Schwartz to Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center, according to Wehr.
American Century releases list of celebrity golfers to participate in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/19/2015 - 4:38pmOnce again, the most popular celebrity golf tournament in the county will be held on the southern shores of Lake Tahoe. The 26th Annual American Century Championship will be held in South Lake Tahoe from July 14-19, 2015 at Edgewood Tahoe.
The list of the 95 participants released resemble the 'A List' of who's who in sports and entertainment, as well as the military. They will all be going after a prize purse of $625,000.

Barton Health, Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District are offering free sports physicals for student athletes.
South Shore students can receive medical and orthopedic screenings from Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics on Monday, June 1 at the South Tahoe High School Blue Gym.
The sports physicals start at 5:30 p.m. with the schedule as follows:
5:30 p.m.: South Tahoe High & Middle School athletes
6:00 p.m.: Pop Warner athletes
6:30 p.m.: Whittell High & Middle School athletes
New football coach headed to South Tahoe High from Lodi
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/07/2015 - 5:08pmTokay High School (Lodi) football coach and athletic director Louis Franklin announced Monday he will be stepping down at the end of the school year after being offered “an opportunity to join Lake Tahoe Unified School District.”
Franklin, a 2000 Tokay graduate, has been the school’s head football coach since 2007 and the athletic director since 2010, when he replaced Jeff Johnston.
Franklin was 38-46 as Tokay’s head coach, including an 0-4 record in the playoffs, but finished with three winning seasons.
Whittell High's Phil Bryant celebrates 705 coaching victories
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/26/2014 - 10:25pmIt's not everyday that you see a high school coach reach the milestone of 700 coaching victories, but Whittell High School's Phil Bryant has done just that. The dual varsity basketball and football coach, Bryant led his basketball team to a win on December 11, making it the 700th time teams he was coaching had a victory.
Since that date, the Warriors have posted wins against Mammoth 72-44, Lee Vining 75-37, Loyalton 74-47, Pyramid Lake 50-46 and Coleville 73-22, bringing Bryant's victory count up to 705.
