Happy New Year from the Friends of the Library of South Lake Tahoe! We want to thank you for your support during this last year through your donations, both books and contributions, to help us supplement our Library’s book and program budgets.

South Lake Tahoe Library: Book sales canceled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To our South Lake Tahoe Library Friends and Community, Thank you for your patience as the Friends of the Library have been working with Library staff and the El Dorado County Public Health Services to continue our book sale events at the Library. Unfortunately, due to weather and grounds concerns and also increasing Covid-19 virus cases in the area, we are canceling our Saturday, November 21 sale and suspending book sale events until the weather warms or we can go back inside. As conditions change, we will let you know and welcome your participation.

South Lake Tahoe Library thanks all for successful summer program

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up our Summer Reading Challenge, which encouraged children, teens, and adults to read all summer long. As with most things, this year looked different than past years with the entire program being moved online.

Although we had fewer participants, El Dorado County patrons still logged almost 20,000 books and earned a total of 872 prizes!

South Lake Tahoe Library presents The Fratello Marionettes on Facebook Live

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library is continuing their summer events even though they cannot present them in person. On Friday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m., join he Fratello Marionettes on the library's Facebook page to see the performance of the classic fairy tale, The Frog Prince.

Outdoor performances have always been part of the Summer Reading Challenge but due to current circumstances, all performances have been moved online.

Library presents virtual magic show as part of Summer Reading Challenge

The South Lake Tahoe Library will host Magician Brian Scott online via Zoom and Facebook Live on Friday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy fun, silly magic on the other side of the screen, as well as learn how to perform a few tricks of their own!

Grab a deck of cards, a dollar bill and a quarter and you will be ready to perform magic too. Perfect for all ages.

Mark Twain: History & Typesetting at the SLT Library - Canceled

This Event Has Been Canceled The Adventures of Mark Twain, Tahoe and the Territorial Enterprise Newspaper in Virginia City. Join the Friends of the Library for an illustrated talk by Steve Robison, printer at Tahoe Letterpress. Mr. Robison will explain how Mark Twain wound up in Virginia City, and on occasion in the Lake Tahoe basin. He will also share his discovery of a vast collection of antique 1860's type from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City where Mark Twain was a reporter and city editor during the early silver discoveries of the Comstock Lode.

Lobby Book Sale SLT Library

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library present an Anthology of Authors

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library will be presenting "An Anthology of Authors" on Saturday, December 14, 2019, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the library.

Stop by to meeting these authors: Gantt Miller, Lyla Dusing, Carol Haase, Karin Holmes, Jennifer Quashnick, Sondra Garner, Pat Crane, Jayme Willison, Mark Klitsie and Lynne Goldsmith.

Books will be available for purchase and signing and there will be raffle prizes.

The Creep Among Us - Golden State Killer – After The Arrest at SLT Library

Ms. Penn will explain forensics, DNA and Genealogy in the final capture of the Golden State Killer. This is the true story of what we know about who this notorious killer is.

Tony Borders will be performing his show "It’s Showtime on Puppet Planet" which includes a mind-reading alien, tricks by Astro the Wonder Dog, and magic that is out of this world.

Free Workshop: How to Design a Tahoe Friendly Garden

There will be time for questions about your individual landscape projects and lots of useful information.

Author Kae Reed to sign and read from new book on Lake Tahoe scenic hikes

“The Dirt Around Lake Tahoe: Must-Do Scenic Hikes” takes readers on a journey to dozens of trails throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin and beyond. Alpine lakes, wilderness peaks and waterfalls are the rewards.

Author Kae Reed, who originally published these articles in Lake Tahoe News, will be a guest of the South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library on July 30. She will be reading from the book, signing copies and answering questions starting at 6pm at the library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

Celebration of Life for Doug Madden

A Celebration of Life has been set for long-time local resident Doug Madden who passed away on February 1, 2019.

Friends and family will be gathering at the Lakeland Village Clubhouse on June 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To attend, please email Mickey at maddens021@gmail.com

Mickey and Doug had been married for 48 years. He is also survived by daughter Shannon Crowe, daughter Kendra Miesner, and granddaughters Brianna and Adrienne. He was an avid dog lover and Cleo and Jake will miss him very much.

Ed Laine ~ 10/17/31 - 11/8/18

Art has a way of making the creator immortal. Such is the case with Ed Laine.

The longtime South Lake Tahoe resident died Nov. 8, 2018, at home. He was 87.

Beyond a large family and rich trove of friends, Ed leaves behind a legacy as an artist. He was a quiet man who for years let his voice be heard through his work.

Born in Palo Alto on Oct. 17, 1931, to Selma Alquist and John Laine, Ed grew up in the Bay Area, having graduated from Sequoia Union High School in 1950. He attended San Jose State College, Cal Arts and the University of Oregon. In Oregon he majored in art.

Music at the SLT Library

This major retrospective exhibition, which is at the Reno museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada.

Putting a Garden to Bed Workshop at SLT Library

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up another great Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children, teens and adults to read all summer long. Patrons at our library logged a total of 5,236 books and earned a total of 817 prizes! We would like to thank the businesses and organizations that donated prizes and funds to our program.

Prizes that children could choose from included gift certificates from Applebee’s Restaurant, Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza, Heavenly Village Cinema, McDonalds, and Modern Makers. Thank you to all of these businesses for their generous donations!

"Follow the Money" Book Launch and Discussion at the SLT Library

Garlic Talk by the Master Gardeners at SLT Library

Group coming to SLT Library uses music to tell stories and tales

Swimmer to share historic swim across Lake Tahoe at SLT Library

Swimmer Erline Christopherson returns! Join the Friends of the Library and Lake Tahoe Historical Society as they welcome back the first woman ever to complete a length-wise swim of Lake Tahoe (and she was only 16). She will share her memories of that record-setting day in 1962 with historic videos, photos and tales.

If you missed her 2014 presentation, this is an amazing story to hear and an awesome opportunity for our community.

All ages are invited to join the Summer Reading Challenge at the South Lake Tahoe Library. This year's theme this year is Libraries Rock!

Children, teens and adults are encouraged to participate in the reading challenge from June 1 – August 31. Register and log activities online at eldoradolibrary.beanstack.org and win a prize for every five books read.

Author M.C. Behm presents his debut novel at SLT Library

Join the Friends of the Library as author M.C. Behm presents his debut novel, "The Elixir of Yosemite". This story takes readers up and down the vertical world of Yosemite National Park as a misfit Park Ranger and South Lake Tahoe teenager try to stop a mercenary from unleashing havoc on America's first protected land. Mr. Behm is a former deep-rural and inner-city schoolteacher, who writes the Tahoe Dad column for the Reno Gazette Journal and Tahoe Mountain News. Join us for an evening of intrigue. Free and open to all.

Tuskegee Airmen History at the SLT Library

Come meet the direct descendants of Original Tuskegee Airmen and hear their personal stories, plus historical facts about the famed “Red Tails,” the first African-American fighter pilots of World War II. Learn about American history that you won’t find in a history book. See real World War II artifacts pertaining to the famed 99th and 332nd Red Tails Squadrons! See and hear real combat footage and video of some of the Original Airmen. Memorabilia available for purchase in support of the Tuskegee Airmen Heritage Chapter’s scholarship program and educational assistance fund.

Sugar Pine Film & Talk at SLT Library

Master Gardener's workshops on growing food in Lake Tahoe

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Classes will run from May 14 - June 14th, 2018 in the evenings.
