Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.
During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.
Thousands of Burners head through Reno-Tahoe International Airport on way to Black Rock Desert

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) was a very busy place Monday as most of the 20,000 people expected to fly in for Burning Man 2019 passed through on their way to the Black Rock Desert.
Attendees to the annual event (known as Burners) were greeted at the airport RNO's therapy dogs, Paws for Passengers, who wore costumes for the day to bring smiles to arriving Burners.
Welcome activities are taking place all week at Air Playa Info, a welcome area staffed by local volunteers dedicated to assisting Burners.
US50 over Echo Summit may close up to 14 days this September

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Highway 50 over Echo Summit may close up to 14 days this September to allow the Caltrans contractor to install new girders and demolition work on the existing bridge structure.
There will be two meetings to inform the public of the potential closure and detour (see attached map). Local residents and businesses will be issued passes to use Johnson Pass Road as a detour during the closure, which if in place would be toward the end of the month. More information on that will be provided at the meetings and not before.

Conservancy considers selling Asset Lands for implementation of Meyers Area Plan

During their meeting this week, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board directed its staff to move ahead with due diligence for their nine asset lands in Meyers. Of the Conservancy’s nearly 4,700 properties in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Conservancy has designated 17 properties as asset lands that could support sustainable compact development consistent with local area plans and the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

STATELINE, Nev. - The 30th annual American Century Championship has gone into the record books as one of the biggest and best golf events in Lake Tahoe history. There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

STATELINE, Nev. - Local Resident, George Waite is producing a special event for the community on Friday, August 23 at 4:00 p.m. at Kahle Community Park. It will be an evening of local bands with all gate proceeds going to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

There will be Tacos by Sombreros Catering for sale and a bounce house for kids.

El Dorado County meets with insurance commissioner on homeowner policy concerns

El Dorado County, Calif. - Currently, homeowners in fire-prone areas of California and El Dorado County are starting to see skyrocketing insurance premiums, canceled policies canceled and notices of non-renewal within weeks of a policy's expiration.
Due to the alarming rates at which this is happening, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors reached out to the California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to explain the dire situation in the county.

'Heartwood' is historical fiction with a mystery woven in the story, while 'The Mountain' is a murder mystery revolving around the theft of Native American artifacts. The most challenging for Conner was launching her first series, featuring veteran Detective Frank Riley. 'Death Song' is a murder mystery that involved research on different forms of poisons, and how they are used. Book sale and signing to follow.

Sierra House Elementary not opening on the first day of school August 26

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first day of school has been pushed out until September 9 for all of the students at Sierra House Elementary School. South Tahoe Now had spoken to the school district on Wednesday and at that time they were still hoping to have the school open by August 26.
Krista Kline Carson ~ 1971 - 2019

Krista Kline Carson passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019 surrounded by family and friends after a 3½ year battle with cancer. Always positive, always upbeat she would constantly describe her life as AWSOME! She was a positive force for everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her husband Jesse Kalin (Philip) Carson, daughter Trella Ruth Carson, parents Don and Gwen Kline, brother and sister-in-law Scott and Jen Kline, step-daughter Madison Merz, step-son Travis Steidle and uncles, cousins and other relatives too numerous to mention.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of all that the Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff does for the community, the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club held a celebration Friday complete with large bouncy houses, a train, and magic show.
All kids who have been attending BGCLT in South Lake Tahoe this summer were on had to enjoy the party provided by Lisa, something she has now done for three years. Besides all the fun and games, the kids were also treated to pizza, hot dogs, watermelon and ice pops.
Community raises over $1,000 for SOS Outreach at Tahoe Chamber event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A recent Tahoe Chamber Connect for a Cause raised funds for SOS Outreach, a youth development non-profit that uses year-round, outdoor sports to engage underserved students in long-term mentor based relationships.
They gathered with community members at Revive Coffee & Wine and enjoyed appetizers, local beer and wine, raffle prizes, and live music from Bond Collins while raising $1,050 for SOS Outreach.

Crews working to get Sierra House Elementary open by start of school

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018, caused extensive damage and forced students to spend the school year at other campuses in South Lake Tahoe - 4th and 5th graders at South Tahoe Middle School and K-3 at the old Al Tahoe campus. With the beginning of school just around the corner, crews have been beefed up and are working overtime to try and get the doors open for all students on August 26.

The South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth Organization would like to thank the following community members and businesses who so graciously helped our THREE Nevada State Championship Teams (13-year olds, 14-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds) compete at the Regional Tournament for the Pacific Southwest with their donations! Over 40 local youth benefited from this generosity by getting to play at the “next” level (one step away from the World Series)! SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – When risk of catastrophic wildfire becomes too great, local electric utilities may turn off the power for extended periods of time. While your first thought might be eating all the ice cream in your freezer, don’t forget to think about your water use. South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) urges customers to conserve water during power outages to make sure there is enough water to fight a fire.

We would like to extend a special thank you to The Beach Retreat and Lodge at Tahoe for their generosity in allowing us to host the Tahoe Beach Bash in their incredible lake-front outdoor space. South Lake Tahoe’s renewable energy leadership is providing the opportunity for the installation of substantive solar projects on the rooftops and properties of public buildings throughout the Sierra. The City took on this leadership role in May after signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to become the lead agency for the Sierra under the Solar Energy and Economic Development (SEED) Fund, a not-for-profit program aimed to empower public agencies to evaluate and participate in regional collaborative procurement of municipal solar projects.
Multi-agency response to the water and gas leak on Seneca Drive

A geyser of water and natural gas on Senaca Drive in Meyers on August 6 brought out a full response from South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Southwest Gas (SWG), Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO).
STPUD responded to the call of a water leak and upon arrival found water gushing from a broken water main. They also smelled gas so called SWG and 911. LVFPD and EDSO secured the area and helped evacuate residents and divert water to minimize property damage.

Opinion: Walking a tightrope between affordable and unsafe housing

Last week, a local motel owner told guests there would be no housekeeping because they didn’t have enough staff due to the local housing shortage. However, the issue is fast becoming not only one of supply, but also one of quality. Many homes that fit the "local's" price range are older buildings - built in the 1970s or earlier. Just like our roads, some of these older buildings are in a state of disrepair and as we know with our roads, patchwork repairs only last so long.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another fire in California, but when and where cannot be predicted and is unknown - but what is known is there will be another community that is devastated by wildland fire.
Residents around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra know this all too well and have been talking about concerns of wildfire threats in and around the Tahoe Basin. Those conversations have turned into plans and the City of South Lake Tahoe has just released an interactive website to help both residents and visitors map out an evacuation plan based on their neighborhood.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Flags are flying in South Lake Tahoe at half-staff in honor of former City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Keith Klein who has passed away.
A noted local architect Klein served on City Council from 1986-1994 and was mayor in 1992. Klein was also involved in the beginnings of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
“He was so much more than a mayor, he was an amazing young man who did so much for the city and asked for nothing in return,” said Former Mayor Del Laine, “He looked for solutions, always had good ideas, and was always honest.”
National Night Out celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

National Night Out is held across the country on the first Tuesday of August and is a time for the public to come together to learn how to be safer as a community. This year in South Lake Tahoe it was held at Bijou Elementary and had multiple agencies interacting with youth and adults with hands-on exhibits and activities.

Millions of butterflies in Lake Tahoe: "Phenomenal Eruption"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you thought you were seeing many more butterflies around Lake Tahoe than normal, you would be correct. The entire Lake Tahoe Basin is in the midst of a massive outbreak of the winged beauties, especially in the Angora Fire burn area and along the east shore.
What most people are seeing is the California Tortoiseshell Butterfly, orange and black on the top of the wings, shades of black underneath. They thrive on the Mountain Whitethorn, part of the Ceanothus family, something that itself is thriving where the Angora fire burned in 2007.
Hazmat response to suspicious powder found in building behind Barton Hospital

5:25 p.m. Update: The El Dorado County HazMat Emergency Response team has confirmed that the powder substance found in a package delivered to Barton's supply chain this morning is not hazardous.
The sequestered employees have been released and the back entrance of the hospital is now accessible to the public.
"Barton is thankful for the local agencies who collaborated with us to ensure the safety of staff and patients," said Mindi Befu, Barton's Director of Marketing, Public Relations & Patient Experience.
