Road Beat: Mitsubishi Outlander GT, A high value alternative
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/14/2019 - 10:51pmWhen tested exactly three years ago, I called the Mitsubishi Outlander a high value, bang for the buck CUV. Now with compact, small-midsize CUVs all costing in the mid $30K range and more, the Mitsubishi stands out even more as my extremely loaded three rows of seats Outlander GT stickered for $36K all in including the boat from Japan. While the price is up a minuscule three percent, additional content and improvements have increased the value quotient. And that quotient grows as inflation would have boosted the price by at least six percent.

The Road Beat: 2019 Mazda 3 - Cementing its number one compact spot
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/04/2019 - 10:17pmMazda has an “all new” Mazda 3. It has some resemblance to the prior generation Mazda 3 but it is a new fourth generation and it had a new designer, Yasutake Tsuchida. Tsuchida continued with the “Kodo” design theme using a very similar, aggressive front end while smoothing out the body ridges and incorporating a sleeker, less complicated rear end. It uses a similar window line except for the “Hofmeister kink” now present in the termination of the rear side windows. It is a better-looking car (then its prior generation) and retains the title of the best-looking compact car.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/26/2019 - 2:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have you ever wanted to experience Lake Tahoe from the comforts of a camper, enjoying the outdoors and campfires, while fishing for dinner outside your door that you'll cook on an open stove? Then cuddling up in bed with nothing but the sounds of nature outside to lull you to sleep?
Don't have the gear to make this happen?
James "Jay" Cooley and Alecia Baker do, and they are in business to help create those kinds of memories with Tahoe RV Rentals.

Road Beat: Toyota Avalon, A Super Car for whom?
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/05/2019 - 10:17amToyota created the Avalon about 25 years ago as a more luxurious and bigger Camry. Eventually, Toyota used the Avalon chassis for its Lexus ES350 series. Nothing wrong there. Now in its fifth generation, the all-new Avalon really is all new. While the nameplate is old, it is looking to attract younger drivers. The median age of Avalon drivers has grown from about 60 in 2005 to about 66 currently. For this new generation Avalon, perhaps the question should be asked: “Why are 66-year old’s having all the fun?”

Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/28/2019 - 8:52pmNot very often does a new car/truck come along that gets my attention as the new Honda Passport did. It is certainly not a rebadged Isuzu as the original “rush to market” first Passport was.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Building resilience in our children and ourselves
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/15/2019 - 3:03pmThe good news is it can be learned!
Building resilience — the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats and/or significant sources of stress — can help us and our children manage stress, uncertainty, and feelings of anxiety. However, being resilient does not mean that we won't experience difficulty or distress. Emotional pain and sadness are common when we have suffered major trauma or personal loss, or even when we hear of someone else's trauma.

Road Beat: Genesis G70 - One of the best cars ever
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/07/2019 - 9:25pmSure, I like most of the vehicles I test, but there are some that stand out. Then from those stand out motor vehicles, we can find the best of the best. When you factor in price or bang for the buck, that best of the best gets very small, maybe two or three vehicles. The new Genesis G70 is one of them. The other vehicle is the Kia Stinger which is a slightly larger sibling of the G70. I will discuss the differences, but for this Road Beat it is the G70 that gets this ultimate spotlight and my tester was an AWD G70 Sport 3.3T.

Road Beat: Honda Pilot, an almost perfect CUV
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/24/2019 - 6:42pmThird generation Honda Pilot has been with us about three years, commencing with the model year 2016. It was an all-new design and ride with the only carryover being the 3.5L V-6 and even that was tricked out a bit with direct injection and 30 more ponies and nine more pounds of twist. Transmissions also got better with a standard six-speeder (one extra gear) and in the Touring and Elite trim lines, you’ll get a nine-speeder, which picks achieves about one mpg in the ratings.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/16/2019 - 8:39pmIt’s hard to believe that it has been only 25 years since Kia came to the U.S. with the 88 hp Sephia. The first TV ad showed a Kia Sephia following a Honda Civic through the streets of Los Angeles (in fast motion) demonstrating it could do anything the Honda Civic could do.

Road Beat: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, electrifying gasoline
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/16/2019 - 7:09pmMitsubishi’s Outlander is an outstanding vehicle and value. I gave it very high marks is most categories especially bang for the buck when I tested it about five months ago. With only a 2.4L, 166 hp inline four-banger, it performed admirably. So, what would happen when Mitsu adds a PHEV battery (12 kwh) to the mix? The answer from my numbers is not exceptional.
Road Beat: 2019 Volvo XC90 AWD

Volvo brought us the XC90 in model year 2003 and it won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. It was a trick vehicle and one of my favorites, especially when equipped with the spectacular 4.4L, 311 hp Yamaha V-8 engine. It was about the perfect SUV with great styling from Volvo designer, Doug Frasher, a man responsible for many great Volvo designs including the S80.

Road Beat: Toyota Sienna, Stellar Performance
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/10/2018 - 7:54pmMinivans are not supposed to be hot rods or even quick. They are for hauling the family with comfortable seven to eight passenger seating (there isn’t a bad seat in this house) while still having massive cargo capacity. Or they are for going to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and God help your credit card. I was actually able to put 12-foot-long baseboard inside this massive shipping container.
