Heavenly Village Turkey Drive gathers 350 turkeys for Christmas Cheer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Christmas is going to be merrier for families on the south shore after an outpouring of support for those less fortunate this holiday season. There have been toy and food drives, and one of those recently held was by The Shops at Heavenly Village and Dreu Murin Productions.

Douglas County sheriff's deputy shot in neck; Two suspects arrested

A Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot and suffered serious injuries late Sunday night following an incident in Gardnerville. Two suspects are in custody.

The incident happened before 11:30 p.m. in the area of Gilman and Douglas streets, near Sharkey's casino, according to dispatch reports.

The condition of the officer is unknown at this time. He was flown by Care Flight to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center in Reno. According to dispatch, the deputy was struck by gunfire in the neck.

Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger Toy Drive for Christmas Cheer a big success

It was the first year the Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger at Stateline held a toy drive for the South Shore, and it was a big success with organizer Dreu Murin saying over $10,000 worth of toys donated to children in the community.

Christmas Cheer, the South Lake Tahoe nonprofit that helps feed locals in need all year was also in need of toys to help bring joy during such trying times. Tom Davis of Christmas Cheer joined up with Murin and other community members to organize the event which brought toys from far and wide to Lake Tahoe on December 6.

Lake Tahoe and Carson City area becoming popular Christmas movie locations

Lights, Camera, Action! These three words beginning the filming of any movie and they've been heard quite a bit recently around the Lake Tahoe and the Carson City area. The beautiful scenery the area provides has been the prefect holiday backdrop for romantic Christmas movies this season.

"Feliz NaviDAD," "Dear Christmas," and "Once Upon a Main Street," were all filmed in the area this year, following last year's "Christmas Reservations" and years of Hollywood movie hits.

Douglas County has recently seen an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases in an extremely short period of time. This is part of a regional and statewide trend in rapidly increasing confirmed COVID-19 infections and they are experiencing strain to their healthcare system and first responders.

Free citizenship preparedness classes offered through TMCC

Truckee Meadows Community College and Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada are offering free citizenship preparedness classes. A grant from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services makes it possible.

Students can pick from two class types, in person or remote.

Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. These will be held inperson at the college's Meadowood Campus from October 3 to December 19, 2020

Or 

Weeknights on Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from October 6 to December 17, 2020. These classes will be held online via Zoom.

Heat advisory in effect all weekend for Lake Tahoe communities

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is going to be a hot one in Lake Tahoe over the Labor Day Weekend as well as in Western Nevada and Northern California.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. Friday to 8:00 p.m. Sundayfor Lake Tahoe due to consecutive days of high temperature. The forecast highs are 90-93 degrees those three days and record high temperatures are likely this holiday weekend.

Not only will there be high temperatures, there will also be widespread haze due to Northern California fires.

John Koster returns to Lake Tahoe to take helm at Harrah's and Harveys

STATELINE, Nev. - A familiar face on the South Shore is returning to be the senior vice president and general manager for Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe properties.

Caesars Entertainment made the announcement today that John Koster will return to the Lake Tahoe gambling scene after the merger of Eldorado Resorts and Caesars Entertainment.

New battalion chief and captain on board for Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District

STATELINE, Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) Chief Scott Baker has announced the promotion of two in his department - Brandon Brady and Mark Norwood.

Warning on unordered packets of seeds being sent to homes in El Dorado County and around the country

People around the country are receiving mysterious seed packets in the mail from China. While the shipping package may be mislabeled as jewelry or other merchandise, the contents are instead unlabeled seeds.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has become aware of a number of reports regarding these seeds.

Some have been mailed to homes in El Dorado County.

El Dorado County Department of Agriculture officials are instructing residents not to open, plant, or dispose of any unsolicited seed packets received, but to contact their office.

Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from Hog Fire near Susanville

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The smoke filling the Lake Tahoe Basin and Northern Nevada Monday morning is from the Hog Fire burning west of Susanville.

The fire is now 5,800 acres and is 0 percent contained.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has been receiving calls since early this morning about the smell of smoke in neighborhoods throughout South Lake Tahoe.

The cooler nighttime temperatures pushed the smoke down.

The National Weather Service in Reno said a dense smoke advisory is in place for areas closers to Susanville

Tuesday: Numbers Fire south of Gardnerville now at 18,000 acres and 0% containment

UPDATE 7:335 p.m.: Douglas County officials say the Numbers Fire has now reached 18,000 acres and is 0% contained. The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas. Please drive safely, watch for emergency vehicles, and be ready for possible future instructions in an ever-changing situation.

Multiple local, state, and federal agencies continue to work on containing the fire using dozers, hand crews, and aircraft.

Tahoe firefighters knock down east shore fire believed to be started by campers

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Engine 344 firefighters are on scene Monday afternoon after a report of a wildfire on Lake Tahoe's east shore.

The Chimney Fire was reported at approximately 1:00 p.m. and is located on National Forest lands south of Chimney Beach near the shoreline. Firefighters have the fire surrounded and have knocked it down. It was reported to be a five-foot by 10-foot fire, said Lisa Herron, spokeswoman for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service releases 4,600 more Lahontan cuthroat into Lake Tahoe

Following a successful three-day operation in October, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week released more than 4,600 Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe, helping to restore the iconic species to its native waters.

Lahontan cutthroat trout are the largest inland cutthroat trout in the world and the only trout native to Lake Tahoe.

The 4,645 fish from the Pilot Peak strain, originated at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville and were released into the Nevada side of the lake this week.

Drought conditions for Northern California and Northern Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This week's Drought Monitor shows much of the West in some level of drought. Lake Tahoe, the Sierra, and Western Nevada are all in a "moderate drought" stage with no end in the immediate future.

The 90-day outlook shows higher than average temperatures and lower than average precipitation, neither of which is good to break out of a drought.

Following below-average precipitation most of the winter, May storms delivered 181 percent of average in the Northern Sierra for this time of year, but the results aren't showing enough to remove the area from drought.

Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series canceled for 2020, Some new 2021 dates announced

STATELINE, Nev. – The 2020 Summer Concert Series at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys has been canceled in response to the public health emergency involving COVID-19. Many of the shows have been rescheduled or postponed, with targeted performance dates in the Summer of 2021. Exact dates to be announced at a later time.

Four-week acting online workshop starts in May in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A four-week on-line acting workshop will be starting on May 11, 2020. Take 2 Performers Studio and Tahoe Production House have teamed up to bring this workshop to youth with a focus on television and film acting.

This is an interactive class where students will develop a solid foundation and acting techniques including improv, auditioning skills for film and television, and on-camera experience with instructors Justine Reyes and Holly Lorge.

152nd Airlift Wing to fly over Lake Tahoe/Northern Nevada hospitals to recognize their COVID-19 battles

The Nevada Air Guard High Rollers will be honoring the men and women in healthcare who are battling COVID-19 by doing a flyover of Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada area hospitals with a C-130 on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

152nd Airlift Wing will start from its base in Reno and pass over Renown South Medical Center at noon, and for an hour pass over the following hospitals.

Washoe County reports their first death of a resident from COVID-19

In a Monday morning press conference, Washoe County updated the community on the current COVID-19 situation as they continue to urge residents to stay at home to prevent its spread.

The first Washoe County resident died from COVID-19 over the weekend. He was in his 49s and the case is under investigation. It is unknown at this time if the man has underlying health conditions.

“We’re devastated to learn that a Washoe County resident has died due to COVID-19,” said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

Douglas County Sheriff's Office: Gardnerville man fatally shot was attempting a home invasion

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified a 36-year-old Gardnerville man who died Saturday from apparent gunshot wounds.

Joshua McCarthy, 36, was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with a homeowner in the 1400 block of Bumblebee Drive while attempting a home invasion, during which the homeowner shot McCarthy, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release.

McCarthy was not known to the homeowner.

New agreement allows NV Energy to lower rates for Northern Nevada customers

A new agreement is resulting in a $5 million decrease in revenue needs for NV Energy which means Northern Nevada customer electric rates are going down.

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) approved the agreement between NV Energy, the Regulatory Operations Staff of the PUCN, the Bureau of Consumer Protection and other interested parties that start new lower rates January 1, 2020.

Remodeled rooms, lounge and restaurant part of $41 million in upgrades for Harveys Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino is undergoing some major projects including the complete remodel of all Lake Tower hotels rooms. Besides these rooms and the new Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen on the casino floor, Harveys is also adding new balcony suites as part of over $41 million in capital projects for 2019-20.

The tower’s balcony suites, with incredible views of the lake, were also renovated last year. The upgraded guest rooms and additional projects as well as a new casino bar and lounge experience opening in 2020 are part of the new capital outlay.

AlertTahoe fire camera system detects 57th fire in Lake Tahoe

The AlertTahoe 11-camera system surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin has been credited for detecting its 57th fire since first being installed in 2013.

As the Kincade Fire in Sonoma and the Easy Fire in Southern California raged, a camera in Lake Tahoe spotted a small fire on the West Shore. Fire crews were able to respond and quickly put it out.

Reno Jazz Orchestra - Home for the Holidays

Stress levels were high this week for students at South Tahoe High School. Seniors finish college applications due at the end of the month and sports head off to regional championships.

This week at South Tahoe High School, students dressed up for Spirit week and seniors on the volleyball and soccer teams played their last home games.

On Campus

To celebrate Halloween, the STHS Leadership and Yearbook groups created a Spirit week, where students dressed up in different themes, including angels versus devils, 80’s day, E-boy/girl versus VSCO girl, Halloween costumes, and blue-and-gold gear.

Points for dressing up increased this week compared to previous Spirit weeks, which helped drive up participation.

Kenton was one of the legendary bandleaders like Duke Ellington and Count Basie who elevated big bands from the dance hall to the concert hall each with their own distinctive sound.

Homecoming week is finally here. Locals and alumni, students and staff of South Tahoe High School prepare for the festive weekend. Students battled for school spirit and built floats, while a new homecoming king and queen are to be crowned under Friday night lights.

Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire

Carol Chaplin named new chair of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority.

Carol Chaplin, the executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority since 2008, has been named the new chairperson of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. The nine-member board oversees both the Reno-Tahoe International and Reno-Stead Airports.

Guest Speakers and Mo'z Motley Blues at Dangberg Historic Park

Chamber TREK to Downtown Carson City to see their main street transformation

Harrah's and Harveys host “Family Fun Festival” on 4th of July

NV Energy and Liberty Utilities outline wildfire mitigation plans for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With electrical transmission lines found to be at fault in recent California fires, agencies responsible for supplying electricity to communities have been creating plans to prevent fires in the future.

Both companies that supply power to Lake Tahoe, NV Energy and Liberty Utilities, have announced new mitigation efforts to reduce the risk of fire.

Series of small earthquakes in region Thursday night

Residents north of Lake Tahoe, Reno, Washoe City, Carson City and Dayton have been responding to a group of earthquakes Thursday night, the largest one a 3.7 magnitude trembler that was centered just east of Washoe Lake at 9:49 p.m.

Between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Thursday:

1.1 magnitude 5.6 miles N of Tahoe City at 2:46 p.m.
2.3 magnitude 5.4 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:43 p.m.
0.8 magnitude 4.8 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:49 p.m.
2.4 magnitude 4.8 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:51 p.m.

Whittell High School student part of Nevada group at Scripps National Spelling Bee

There are two from the Northern Nevada area who competed in this week's Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.

Morgan Salvador, a 12-year-old 7th grader who attends George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove was Speller No. 284, while Morgan Bumgardner, Speller 275, is a 13-year-old Dayton Intermediate School student. He is listed as being from Mound House. Both students were, unfortunately, eliminated as they worked their way into the finals.

Team Tahoe brings home the GOLD!!!

Today I witnessed selflessness in it’s purest form. Here is an athlete cheering on another whose abilities are more physically challenged than his own. He recognizes the effort it takes for his friend to accomplish the task before him. Ryan Willfords, who is in the wheelchair, is a long time friend of Michael Cotter his faithful encourager.
