Column: The importance of breast cancer screening

The reminder to schedule a breast cancer screening test comes on strong during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This month, let each splash of pink you see be an encouragement to get screened with a self-exam, physician exam, or a mammogram.

It’s also a good time to get a feel for your own unique breast density, and establish a baseline to help identify warning signs of breast cancer, including:

- A lump in the breast or armpit
- Swelling or thickening of all or part of the breast
- Dimpling or skin irritation of breast skin
- Localized, persistent breast pain

Team led by Whittell grad develops race car that goes 1,215 miles per gallon

Mickey George, a member of the Whittell High School class of 2012, helped the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Supermileage Team recently achieve high scores at the Shell Oil Eco-Marathon in Detroit.

The three-day event scores a car's performance based on energy efficiency, not speed. George served as the team's manufacturing lead.

Achieving 1,215 miles per gallon, Cal Poly's gasoline-fueled prototype vehicle was the top-scoring American entry and placed third overall at the 10th annual competition.

Metatatic Breast Cancer deserves more

October is pumpkin spice and jack o lanterns and crisp mornings and pink ribbons. It is Halloween and homecoming and races “for the cure”. For people like me, with metastatic breast cancer, it is “Pinktober” and a reminder that we will never be cured, because despite 30 years of awareness and fundraising, 40,000 Americans still die every year from metastatic breast cancer, just as many as died in 1970.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue goes pink

For the month of October, members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Department will be wearing their pink shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

"We will wear pink from October 1 to October 31," said Captain Tyler Jack, a 8.5 year veteran of SLT Fire.

This is the third year for the pink, a program spearheaded by the firefighter's association. They used to sell the shirts with half of the proceeds going to fight the battle against breast cancer, but with a change in their logo they didn't order new shirts according to Jack.
