South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

Letter: New SnowGlobe contract still doesn't address concerns

SnowGlobe remains a popular and divisive event in South Lake Tahoe. It brings thousands of visitors during our busiest holiday and drives room rates through the ceiling. It also is now proven to violate El Dorado County noise regulations which the County refuses to enforce. It violates the Bijou/Al Tahoe Community Plan noise regulations which the TRPA refuses to enforce. It violates the requirements of the Temporary Activity Permit which both the City and TRPA are working to revise.

Five year contract for a revamped Snowglobe on City Council agenda

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the Snowglobe Music Festival is held in South Lake Tahoe for just three days a year, it's a year-long series of negotiations and discussions between staff, agencies, the No-Globe Alliance and the public to work out details for the next December's event.

During the June 18 City Council meeting, a new, multi-year Special Event Agreement

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

Column ~ The fight continues: Battling aquatic invasive species at Tahoe

While it felt like spring had finally arrived, we all know Mother Nature can be fickle, especially at Lake Tahoe. For those who love to play in the snow, it was a fantastic winter, and a banner year for the Sierra snowpack. Despite some cooler weather now, steady warmer temperatures are on the way and our attention is shifting from the mountains to the lake.

Column: Sports Connection and its Story

In 2007, just as the Angora fire was breaking, Amy Jackson hurriedly attempted to pack her belongings, not knowing what the outcome would be. As she did so, she remembered that she had promised a young 8th-grade boy that if he met her with his birth certificate verifying his age, that she would help cover his fee for AYSO soccer that year. She thought of what to do? I better go, she decided. As she approached their neighborhood in Bijou, she encountered not only the one boy she had promised to meet, but many other boys as well. She was in shock.

Movie Review: John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum opens Friday

As a fan of the first "John Wick" movie I gotta tell you I didn't think any sequel would top it but boy, was I wrong! From the opening scenes 'til the end, it's non-stop action with a body count higher than the number of politicians wanting to run for president of the United States. “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum” picks up where number 2 left off as Wick is a worldwide wanted man: wanted by every assassin with a $14 million on his head. Keanu Reeves reprises the role that he was born to play (sorry "Matrix" fans).

Duran Duran to play at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert series

British pop/rock superstars Duran Duran are coming to Lake Tahoe for the 2019 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Friday, Sept. 13.

At the dawn of the ‘80s, a group of young men in Birmingham, England had a sound in their ears - one with echoes of glam, art-pop and dance. The band they formed quickly became a household name and, four decades later, Duran Duran have sold over 100 million records, had 18 American hit singles, 20 UK Top 20 tunes and continue to perform to huge concert audiences around the world.

Column: Let’s make plan - Prepare and then let go

Did you know that the number of people in Tahoe can triple in the summer months? All of Tahoe South is changed by the many visitors that join us for the fabulous Summers. To get the most out of Tahoe prepare, then just go with the flow.

Make Reservations and Show Up Early

In Yoga, we practice sajatta (preparedness). Considering the options and outcomes, but letting go of expectation allows for and reduces stress. Doing your best to prepare for your next Tahoe Adventure will help you to have a more relaxed experience.

With registration up 30 percent from last year, the High Sierra Board would like to thank and share the generosity of a local business and service club who are helping the athletes in our league participate to their fullest.

Blue Zone Sports donated 12 softball gloves to the league.

"Many of our kids don’t have any equipment or are using their grandpa's old baseball glove," said Board President, Chris Chandler. "This donation is very thoughtful and essential for our players."

Column: Moderation is the key - How to prepare for summertime

I was on the beach today for my first Bachelorette Party Yoga Practice of the season. These sessions are some of my favorite. I love being outside. I love looking at the lake and the mountains. I love sharing in the practice of Yoga for such a joyful event. I am also very good at connecting with and recognizing how prepared each group is for the practice that day.

New camping ordinance approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent decision that stated cities cannot criminalize sleeping on public property where there is no alternative shelter space available, the City Council Tuesday updated South Lake Tahoe's camping code.

Prior to Tuesday, the City Code prohibited camping on all public property, except in areas specifically designated for camping, but that was not enforceable since there is no permanent shelter in South Lake Tahoe at this time, just seasonal.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Building resilience in our children and ourselves

The good news is it can be learned!

Building resilience — the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats and/or significant sources of stress — can help us and our children manage stress, uncertainty, and feelings of anxiety. However, being resilient does not mean that we won't experience difficulty or distress. Emotional pain and sadness are common when we have suffered major trauma or personal loss, or even when we hear of someone else's trauma.

2nd Bi-Annual Basin Blitz shows Caltrans renovations help Lake Tahoe

The League to Save Lake Tahoe held its second bi-annual Basin Blitz this spring to assess progress in improving Lake Tahoe’s stormwater infrastructure (pipes, drains and sediment-catching basins). These features flow directly into Lake Tahoe and carry fine sediment pollution from our roads and neighborhoods into the lake, further degrading its clarity.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Strong communities play a roll in preventing abuse

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and offers our community a time to increase awareness of the issues related to child maltreatment, identify strategies to strengthen families and understand how everyone in our community can be an everyday hero for children.

Strong, nurturing communities support families and play a role in preventing child abuse and neglect and promoting child and family well-being. Support can come in the form of helping to watch the kids for a couple of hours,

On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, Tom and Cheryl Millham, founders of LTWC, drove to Rancho Cordova to pick up Blaze and Yreka, two very young cubs from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Investigation Lab.

South Lake Tahoe students celebrated during World Down Syndrome Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day of crazy socks, mismatched shoes and untied shoelaces at the Sierra House Elementary campus at Al Tahoe Learning Center Thursday in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

Kindergarten teacher Amy Terpening organized #RockYourSocks day in her classroom and held a surprise celebration of her student Dylan Polan who has Down Syndrome. The six-year-old came through a tunnel created by her fellow students and then sat down to be "interviewed" by her teacher. The students displayed paper socks they decorated with fun shapes and colors.

Column: Fees benefit water quality and trails

While it still feels like winter, with a healthy snowpack and ski resorts reporting record monthly snowfall in February, another building season is fast approaching. One of the questions people ask the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency each year is why they have to pay mitigation fees for their development, like new homes and remodeling projects.
